Underground Empire star Kelly MacDonald has starred in the BBC One / Netflix co-production thriller Giri / Haji ("Duty / Shame"). MacDonald will play Sarah, a London police officer and forensic lecturer who teams up with a Japanese detective in search of his brother, who has contacted the Yakuza. This is reported by the publication Deadline with reference to its sources.

The project, which was first announced in May 2017, is being dealt with by the screenwriter of the TV series "People" Joe Barton and producer Jane Featherstone ("Murder on the Beach"). In an eight-episode thriller, Tokyo detective Kenzo arrives in London in search of his wayward little brother, Yuto. Presumed dead, Yuto, according to new sources, is a member of the Yakuza in London and is wanted for the murder of a Japanese businessman in the UK capital.
