A Google subsidiary is building a future quarter in Toronto


A subsidiary of the tech giant Google, Sidewalk Labs, has been developing a "city of the future" in Toronto for three years. The project was proposed in 2014 by former Alphabet chairman Eric Schmidt, and in 2015 the first attempts to put its elements into practice began.

Two more years later, the initiative was renamed Sidewalk Toronto. Prior to this, the project received approval from the city authorities for the construction of a 300 hectare smart neighborhood along the east coast of Ontario. The 200-page description assumes the use of robots and drones as couriers, the presence of unmanned public transport, the construction of modular buildings using 3D technology and the use of smart traffic lights.

Sidewalk Labs is not the first and not the only company that has set itself the goal of putting such ideas into practice, but some of its solutions are truly unique: for example, modular construction, a technology with which you can erect and dismantle buildings in the shortest possible time. p>


It is assumed that residents of the first version of the smart district will mostly use cars with traditional types of engines. Subsequently, when more and more people switch to electric cars, it is planned to convert some of the filling stations into charging stations, and some of them will be converted into shops and maintenance services.

And what is this miracle made of?


Environmentally friendly and affordable materials will be used for the construction of the district, and their availability is considered the main priority. This is how Sidewalk Labs intends to tackle the problem of inequality between segments of the population, which begins with the fact that less affluent citizens cannot afford to purchase quality housing from modern materials near their place of work and therefore fall into a vicious circle of poverty.

Smart city monetization


By the time smart neighborhoods and cities become ubiquitous, there are many issues to be resolved. Confidentiality and security are paramount.

The problem of monetizing the quarter is also quite acute. When asked about how Sidewalk Labs is going to generate revenue from the smart district, the company replies that it does not have a clear answer yet . At the same time, its representatives say that they do not consider a business model with the possibility of demonstrating targeted advertising to residents as the only option.
