Adobe developers taught artificial intelligence to find traces of Photoshop in photos

A new program from developers from Adobe, using artificial intelligence technology, has learned to determine the "naturalness" of photos.

To distinguish between changes in the original image, the algorithms analyze the photo according to three parameters: the presence of a mixture of several images in it, removal of some parts, copying and dragging elements.

Artificial intelligence components look for transformations made to the original graphics. As the creators of the tool explain, within tens of seconds the program detects residual phenomena that remain after making graphic edits. If, for example, in different areas of a photograph there is a distribution of noise of a non-uniform plan, this is considered a direct indication that the frame could have been composed from several original images. Watermarks and metadata allow the algorithm to restore the original appearance of the image.

During the training session, the program processed several tens of thousands of graphic images to search for common characteristics of the changes made. According to the developers themselves, the tool has learned to find traces of graphical editing that similar programs cannot yet see. However, the new Adobe development is good at detecting relatively simple types of changes, but has not yet learned to recognize edits at a more complex level, for example, differences in reflections and shadow geometry.

At the beginning of the year, Adobe presented an updated look for Photoshop with an integrated AI function. Among the features of the updated program, such options have been added as highlighting an area with an artificial intelligence tool, adjusting the program interface to a device with any diagonal, and support for high-resolution displays.
