Qualcomm officially presented new chips for smartphones and laptops - Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor for flagship mobile devices has 8 cores of different clusters with frequencies of 2.84, 2.42 and 1.8 GHz ... The manufacturer claims that the new platform is almost twice the performance of the previous model 845, while the graphics are 20% stronger.
The mobile platform is equipped with Adreno 640 graphics, a Hexagon 690 auxiliary processor and a separate Spectra 380 chip for image processing. Separately highlighted is the Snapdragon X50 chip with 5G network support. The Snapdragon 855 itself, having the Snapdragon X24 circuit in its design, works with LTE networks. With this solution, budget manufacturers will also be able to take full advantage of Qualcomm's new platform without 5G support.
In addition to high performance, the new Qualcomm smartphone processor has new capabilities thanks to the Adreno 640 graphics, which will enable the S855 to run HDR games as well as 120fps games. The platform's graphics component supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision support, and is capable of smoothly playing 8K video.
The S855 mobile platform works with the next generation image format. Besides the famous JPEG, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor supports the more functional HEIF file format. The S855 supports 802.11ay Wi-Fi wireless technology, which can accelerate data transfers up to 10 Gbps.
In addition to the smartphone chipset, the company presented the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx processor for PCs. Its advantages include high performance, support for heavy graphics, long battery life and the ability to use in devices running Windows 10. An important feature of the chip, the manufacturer calls high energy efficiency, small size and no need for active cooling.
The processor is based on 7-nanometer technology and combines various auxiliary components. With its help, it is possible to create light laptops with a thin body with support for constant Internet connection.
The eight-core Snapdragon 8cx is supported by the Adreno 680 graphics component, which is twice as powerful as the previous generation, the Hesagon 650 "assistant" is present in the chipset for labor-intensive tasks. Adreno 680 graphics can handle two external monitors with 4K resolutions at once. The platform received a Snapdragon X24 LTE Category 20 cellular modem operating at download speeds up to 2 Gbps. Equipped with 16GB of RAM, the new Qualcomm laptop processor supports USB 3.1 Type-C for data transfer speeds up to 10Gbps and fast charging technology.
A number of mobile device and laptop manufacturers, including Google, Samsung and OnePlus, have already shown interest, so mobile flagships and powerful laptops based on the latest generation of Qualcomm processors may appear as early as next year.
