Intel Augmented Reality: More Interesting and More Convenient than Google Glass (Topic)

Just the other day, Intel introduced a new concept of augmented reality glasses. Compared to rival Google Glass, Vaunt glasses have a number of differences, and they look no different from ordinary ones.

Prototype development belongs to Intel New Devices Group. Glasses are fundamentally different from a competitive product: they do not have a microphone, camera, or even buttons. All technical stuffing (microprocessor with sensors and battery) is built into the frame and evenly distributed in it. The material is flexible and durable, the total weight of the glasses together with the lenses is less than 50 grams, which makes them comfortable for everyday work.

But the most interesting feature of the novelty is the projection of the picture. The frame does not have the usual display, and the image is built directly on the retina of the right eye using a low-power monochrome laser. The resolution of the picture is 400x150 px and is suitable for displaying text information, for example, weather or a message sent to a smartphone. Since the projected image lies directly on the retina of the eye, no additional focus adjustment is required. Thus, the device will suit absolutely anyone with any visual acuity.

Algorithm for displaying images

The image output algorithm is designed in such a way that if you do not look at it, the image disappears. Information is displayed unobtrusively and goes out of sight when not needed. According to the authors of the project, the laser system is completely safe for the eye and will not affect vision in any way during prolonged use. The projection component is so lightweight that Intel does not need to obtain a separate certification of conformity.

With the help of internal compass and accelerometer sensors, the glasses are perfectly oriented in space and track the movement of the head. Pairing with the phone is carried out via Bluetooth. What other components are located inside the glasses is still unknown. Vaunt is just a prototype, in the final version it is possible to add a microphone and a number of other chips.

The cost of the glasses has not been disclosed, but this year Intel will allow third-party developers to create software for them.
