The radioactive wasteland in the Fallout series has always been an uncomfortable place, full of the horrors of war and broken destinies, which tried to adapt to a changed and hostile world. Fallout 4 was no exception, and despite the lightened color scheme, it could sometimes cause feelings of fear or at least discomfort. However, this is still nothing compared to how Fallout 4 mods can change the wasteland, make it truly terrifying and significantly refresh the experience of the game. For example, I have compiled a selection of 10 such mods that turn a Bethesda game into a horror game.
A basic mod for anyone who wants to make their night walks around the game world a much more atmospheric and frightening adventure. The ingenious is simple - the modification significantly worsens visibility at night, which, as expected, leads not only to increased realism, but also frightening situations when it is not visible, and silhouettes of screaming and rapidly approaching ghouls emerge from the darkness. Just 10 out of 10 used diapers, so we highly recommend downloading this mod to Fallout 4.
Note that the modification has a number of settings that allow you to adjust both the level of illumination at night and the ability of enemies to detect the player in the dark.
The abundance of bright shades and colors in Fallout 4 already from the day of the release of the game does not allow the army of modmakers to calm down, trying to add more gloom and hopelessness to the game's palette. Among such visual mods I would like to mention Polluted Climate. As the name suggests, it contaminates the wasteland climate with frequent radioactive storms and rains, and much less saturated colors. But most importantly, after its installation, the lands of post-apocalyptic America are often enveloped in fog, which, together with Darker Nights, makes the night an even more frightening time.
Probably the best horror mod for Fallout 4, turning the game into a massive version of Silent Hill. The ambient of Akira Yamaoka and the concept of two worlds have moved from the legendary Japanese horror series to the mod: the first comes in the daytime - the whole environment is buried in a viscous and impenetrable fog, then the second world comes - night, where, in addition to pitch darkness, the world is filled with hordes of ghouls and creatures familiar from Silent Hill. The mod changes the game quite a lot compared to the vanilla version, so it is recommended for everyone who is already tired of the usual vision of Fallout 4 through the eyes of Bethesda and wants new sensations.
And my favorite highlight of the mod is the lilac-headed one that appears during the daytime in the forests, wastelands and on the outskirts of the map. Its appearance alone can cause discomfort, and what can we say about the string of annoying sounds it makes, a deafening siren and echoes of old recordings, which together create an unpleasant cacophony. Even the best armor in Fallout 4 won't make you feel safe when you meet him.
The standard flashlight on the Pip-Boy is unusual due to the spread of light in several directions, but precisely because of this it loses in the atmosphere to a standard flashlight with a direct beam of light. Pip-Boy Flashlight is a mod for Fallout 4 that changes the Pip-Boy lighting fixture for the flashlight we are used to. Not only does it complement the atmosphere, but with a limited radius of illumination, it can create a feeling of dread due to the likelihood of not seeing approaching enemies.
Aggressive synth voice overhaul
Synths have always seemed to me to be one of the most formidable opponents in the game. Either the reason is in their ability to disguise themselves as mannequins, or in the lifeless intonations of their voices, or simply because of the similarity with the cyborgs from the movie saga "The Terminator" and "Aliens". In any case, even in the base game, the synths were uncomfortable. Isn't that enough for you? Then I suggest trying the Aggressive synth voice overhaul mod, which gives cyborgs a much lower and intimidating voice. Obviously, this mod on Fallout 4 will not be able to scare, but add a bit of additional discomfort - of course!
If you've never looked for cheats on Fallout 4 or even thought about using them, you still have one cheat with you, courtesy of Bethesda itself - stopping time when using Pip-Boy. Of course, with its help, you can catch your breath even in the fiercest fight, get medical treatment, plan further tactics and even play a video game, and let the world wait. This indulgence completely eliminates all possible feelings of fear from battles, so we offer the Fallsouls mod, which disables time stopping when you turn on the Pip-Boy or open the menu.
Have you ever felt uncomfortable looking at or near mannequins? If yes, and there were such cases, then you probably have a real fear of mannequins, which is known in the medical community as pediophobia. But even in the absence of a phobia, the dummy feed can cause unpleasant sensations, which the developers used, placing them all over the game world. To make the mannequins even more sinister, we suggest the next mod for Fallout 4 - Creepy Mannequins, which turns mannequins into human stuffed animals, as if created by an insane taxidermist.
Often, the feeling of fear arises from the fact that at a particular moment in time we have a minimum of information about the environment and / or about the found stimulus. The less we know, the less able to fully manage the situation and, therefore, make mistakes that additionally negatively affect our self-control. During the game, we get the greatest amount of useful information from the interface - minimap, sight, ammo and life counter. This means that by removing the interface, we limit ourselves to the information coming from outside and automatically receive more acute emotions during the game. Not everyone will work this way, but it's worth a try.
To disable the interface, we suggest downloading Fallout 4 Immersive HUD - perhaps the best mod of this type. If you wish, you can customize it and remove for a while only those interface elements that you are not using at the moment.
An excellent mod that follows the precepts of classic horror games and fully conveys the horror of claustrophobia. As the creator of the modification said, Claustrophobia is a kind of declaration of love for Resident Evil 1 and Silent Hill 2. Sources of inspiration are guessed literally in every aspect. The mod allows us to explore a dilapidated mansion that keeps its terrifying secrets and is extremely inhospitable, so it will not be superfluous to stock up on removable underwear before passing. Secret passages, damn narrow rooms, a frightening interior with dummies watching the player here and there, creaking floorboards, howling wind and deadly monsters are included.
Giant armies of the living dead scurrying around the world senselessly are an obligatory attribute of almost every self-respecting horror about zombies. The overwhelming panic from slowly advancing hordes of zombies is an invaluable and invigorating feeling that can be experienced in Fallout 4 after installing the Zombie Walkers mod. With him, flocks of ghouls will slowly wander around the world, which you hardly want to bother, but if you get into their line of sight, run and shoot only in the head. Also, the ghouls from the mod now have the ability to spread infection - every NPC killed by ghouls turns into a zombie.
The mod works especially well with Darker Nights, Whispering Hills and other mods that change the weather and light level.
