Each new iPhone model comes with a new version of the iOS operating system and 2017 was no exception. iOS 11 was released in September along with the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, later joined by the iPhone X.

The system is full of various enhancements and functionalities, such as portrait lighting when shooting, a redesigned App Store, emergency calls and screen recording.

The update is very extensive and has hidden features that are not visible at first glance. Some of them will be described below.

Thumbnail videos and images

If you're an avid photographer or social media star who loves showing your life to others, chances are your iPhone is filled with videos and photos that you don't want to part with.

The latest update to iOS 11 brings support for HEVC video files and HEIF images. In simple terms, photos and videos will remain the same quality, but the file size will be smaller.

Improved storage management

Continuing the topic of dimensions, iOS 11 has made it easier to work with persistent memory. The settings section, formerly iCloud Storage & Usage , is now simply iPhone Storage . Along with the name change, the design has become clearer. Users receive guidance on how to free up additional disk space.

For example, if you have 2 GB of messages, you may receive a recommendation to transfer them to the cloud storage and delete them from your smartphone. This will free up space for more necessary things, but at the same time always be able to read the correspondence.

Built-in QR code scanner

Everyone knows the strange codes with black and white stripes that can be seen on various signs and cards. To scan such a code, in the past, you had to install third-party apps and the iPhone took you to the site associated with that code.

QR codes are not popular in all countries, but Apple is trying to change that. In iOS 11, you can use a regular camera application to scan these codes, after which the desired site opens immediately, no applications need to be installed.

Better control over app access to your location

The system has received the " Location Service " option for each installed application. Previously, application developers decided whether to add this feature or not, most chose the second option. You could have blocked apps from accessing your location or allowed it, which increased power consumption.

Thanks to iOS 11, the settings have an option to access the app's location only while you are using it.

Get rid of ads

In its constant battle with Google, the Safari browser is again trying to block ads and prevent sites from tracking you. Sites can monitor you using cookies that are bound to your browser when you visit the pages of this site.

Safari in iOS 11 can now block cookies. This does not mean that there will be no ads in the browser at all, it just won't follow you everywhere. However, Google has found a way to counter this ban.
