The second generation of Google Glass will soon be introduced, which is not intended for a mass audience. An updated version of the previous model contains improvements to all basic elements. The professional device is aimed at business clients and corporate users.
Google glasses are not intended for the general consumer market due to the failure of their very first release in 2013. The Enterprise Edition 2 glasses are now undergoing tests by the FCC, the US profile commission, and the date of their official release has not yet been announced. The design of the new item can be viewed in the image provided by the FCC, which traces the work of engineers in improving the ergonomic properties of AR-glasses compared to the previous generation of devices. The next generation of Google Glass will be equipped with high-quality optics and a camera with higher resolution support.
Project start and development
The project started in 2013 with the presentation of the concept of virtual reality glasses. Initially, Google Glass was designed for the mass consumer, and the first batch of the device in a limited edition appeared in the same year. The cost of the device reached $ 1,500. The novelty mainly found its buyer in the person of developers and programmers. A year later, glasses at the same price began to be offered to a wider range of consumers.
Outwardly, the glasses looked like a horizontal metal frame, which ends on both sides with temples. On the right side, the device had a 5MP camera, which also housed a touchscreen control panel. Among the technical components in the device was a 780 mAh battery, support for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technologies, 1 GB of RAM (later increased to 2 GB) and 16 GB of internal memory. Additionally, Google Glass was equipped with a gyroscope, magnetometer, accelerometer. The device operated on the Android 4.4 KitKat mobile system.
However, given the potential, Google's initial AR glasses concept was not successful. Not the least role was played by the high cost, although the owners of the device noted a number of shortcomings. User dissatisfaction was directed at the quality of the software, incompletely developed voice control that only supports English, lack of autonomy, lack of work with the iOS system and the need to ensure constant communication with the smartphone via Bluetooth.
Conversion to corporate clients
As a result, the search engine closed its project in 2015 and began working on an improved version based on the first model. The second option was the Glass Enterprise Edition concept, presented and released for implementation in 2017. Taking into account the feedback on the previous device, the updated professional google glasses received a more advanced software component and a longer autonomy period.
The turnkey solution turned out to be lighter due to the use of composite materials; the time without recharging has doubled due to the introduction of a more powerful battery. The technical equipment changed the processor - Intel Atom was used, the volume of the internal storage increased to 32 GB, the Wi-Fi module began to support 2.4 and 5 GHz, GPS and GLONASS navigators were added.
By the time of release, second-generation Google Glass glasses will be available only to corporate clients of the company. The first generation model is currently used by employees of such giants as Samsung, General Electric, Volkswagen, and the reviews about it are mostly positive. The device has found application in various fields: augmented reality glasses freed doctors from part of the paperwork, the American manufacturer of agricultural equipment AGCO managed to reduce production time by a quarter, DHL employees showed the best efficiency when using AR glasses.
