Top 20 Must-Have Games of 2019 Part 2

Image

We continue to highlight the top 20 games of 2019, but with a few minor improvements. Unlike the first part of our top games, this time we will cover not only big-budget blockbusters, but also projects of a smaller caliber, designed primarily for PC players and a small stratum of loyal fans.

Doom Eternal

Release date: 2019

Playable: PC, Playstation 4, Xbox On e

2016 we remember most of all with the triumphant return of Id Software and meat shooters in the face of hellishly addicting DOOM. The proven formula of an adrenaline shooting gallery, first-class graphics and demonic adversaries successfully fired, so the issue of the continuation was resolved even before the release of the game. Doom Eternal is not going to impress with significant innovations and is being developed as a benchmark sequel: a little innovation, more content and even more ways to tear apart the fiends of Hell.

The scene will move to a fire-engulfed Earth, so the bestiary will expand with familiar zombies from the original 1993 DOOM. And if you are bored with the sight of the destroyed Earth, then the Executioner of Doom is going to visit the lunar base Phobos, frightening the last surviving representatives of humanity to trembling knees. In addition, in Doom Eternal, both the number of demons per square meter and the size of the locations itself will increase, along which you can now navigate a la Spider-Man using the hook built into the double-barreled gun. In general, fans of meat shooters will find a worthy contender for the best game of 2019.

Mortal Combat 11

Release date: April 23

Where to play: PC, Playstation 4, Xbox One

Another legendary franchise will continue in 2019 - Mortal Combat 11. As in the case of DOOM, the new release in the Mortal Kombat series is not going to deviate from the canons and will offer another portion of the good old ultra-violence. Honestly, we are even scared to imagine how far this time the developers will go in terms of rendering sadistic fatalities. It is only obvious that the faint of heart is advised to play Mortal Combat 11 strictly with their eyes closed.

The creator of the series, Ed Boone, informed the very little of the details about the game and promised a full screening of the project as part of a special event on January 17 We can definitely count on the traditional storyline for the series, but other details are mostly rumors. Insiders claim that in Mortal Combat 11, the developers have significantly improved the animation and are going to expand the pack of characters known from the comics as the superhero Spawn.

Ghost of Tsushima

Release date: 2019

Play: Playstation 4

Continuing our top of the main games of 2019, another exclusive for the Japanese Playstation 4 console - Ghost of Tsushima. The game is being developed by the American studio Sucker Punch Productions and will plunge the player into one of the bloodiest stages of Japanese history, when the Mongol yoke invaded the Land of the Rising Sun, turning the serene eastern lands into blazing ruins with rivers and lakes red with blood. As in the best samurai sagas, we will have to single-handedly fight foreign fanatics and return Japan to its former greatness.

On a heroic journey, the player will be able to use an extensive arsenal of Japanese weapons, but nothing beats the trusty katana. The first gameplay of Ghost of Tsushima clearly demonstrated that skirmishes in the game are lightning fast and close to real battles, when the outcome of the battle is decided with the help of 2-3 well-aimed strikes. The only thing that confuses us about Ghost of Tsushima is the open world. The main question is: can the island of Tsushima offer players something more than the mesmerizing landscapes of feudal Japan? We hope to find out later this year.

Wasteland 3

Release date: End of 2019

Where to play: PC, Playstation 4, Xbox One

It's time to take a break from the flow of big-budget blockbusters and look at games of a smaller caliber, but no less intriguing. One of them is the post-apocalyptic RPG Wasteland 3 by the studio of the legendary Brian Fargo. The first thing that catches your eye is the snowy setting. Another point is the presence of multiplayer. As in Divinity Original Sin 2, you can play the game in co-op, while you can collect an entire army, since each player can take a squad of several playable characters into the team.

One can only sympathize with the inhabitants of the snow-covered wasteland, who dare to stand in the way of the army of rangers. Another innovation is the availability of controlled vehicles that will be useful for quickly moving around the world of the game and as mobile weapons of mass destruction. For the rest, we are waiting for an improved version of Wasteland 2, which we have brought without a drop of doubt to the top of the best modern RPGs. Therefore, the question whether it is worth waiting for the release of Wasterland 3 seems rhetorical to us.

Rage 2

Release date: May 14

Where to play: PC, Playstation 4, Xbox One

And one more project in the post-apocalypse genre, which at the same time targets a completely different audience. Rage 2 is, first of all, a primal fan of adrenaline-fueled shooting and contemplation of bloody carcasses of enemies scattering across the screen. The sequel continues the tradition of the 2010 shooter and looks like an even crazier version of Far Cry. After the green mohawk freaks playing baseball with grenades, Far Cry 3's Madman squad looks like exemplary seminary graduates.

Rage 2 also stands out with two studios responsible for the development of the game. Id Software is working on the shooter component and storyline, and Avalanche Studios was invited to create an open world game. But despite such an ambitious approach, we hardly expect that Rage 2 will be able to enter the top of the best games. Id Software has never impressed with both the plot and the characters, and the open worlds authored by Avalanche are nothing more than beautiful scenery with activities in the style of "entertain yourself".

Dying Light 2

Release date: presumably fall 2019

Where to play: PC, Playstation 4, Xbox One

If 10 years ago the expression "Polish igroprom" looked ridiculous, in 2019 Poland can become the new "Hollywood in the gaming industry", producing some of the best projects on the planet. Of course, we are talking about Cyberpunk 2077 and the zombie shooter Dying Light 2. The latter is worth waiting for at least because the developers decided on bold experiments and instead of another primitive open-world sandbox they are preparing a real RPG, where every player's decision does not affect only for the plot, but will also allow you to transform the world around you beyond recognition.

To realize ambitious plans requires the help of brilliant people, so the developers invited the legend of the role-playing genre - Chris Avelon to develop Dying Light 2. The maestro is responsible for working out the dialogues, characters and plot, where there are no clear divisions into good and evil. But even with a nod to the RPG, Dying Light 2 is faithful to the concept of the first game and offers the familiar zombie meat grinder with parkour elements.

Phoenix Point

Release date: June 2019

Where to play: PC, Xbox One

Phoenix Point stands out as one of the most anticipated games of 2019. For veteran PC players, the best recommendation for buying the game will be news, led by XCOM creator Julian Golopp at Phoenix Point. The veteran of the gaming industry did not change his principles, so Phoenix Point almost completely copies the concept of XCOM, so much so that if you look at it carefully, the game may seem like an add-on for Firaxis Games.

But the devil is in the details. For example, full destructible environments and an analogue of VATS from Fallout are promised. Even more changes in the global mode, where developers add elements of the Civilization series to the familiar XCOM model. In the world of the game, 3 human factions operate separately from each other. You can either cooperate with them and lead humanity to a bright future, or sabotage enemy buildings, kidnap scientists or politicians, and even arrange coups d'etat within foreign factions. The phrase "Divide and Conquer" is more relevant than ever for Phoenix Point.

Shenmue 3

Release date: August 27

Where to play: PC, Playstation 4

The continuation of the legendary Shenmue dilogy simply had to be born, it could not be otherwise. After the controversial ending of the second movement in the style of "To be continued", the triquel had to wait for almost 20 years. So it comes as no surprise when game creator Yu Suzuki, presenting Shenmue 3 on Kickstarter, raised $ 6 million for the game from loyal fans, setting a new record for the platform.

What is Shenmue3? Like the first two parts, the game combines several genres: fighting, open-world adventure and RPG. Nothing new, but in 1999, in terms of interactivity and open-world design, Shenmue was for its time what Red Dead Redemption 2 was for 2018. From Shenmue 3, we dare not expect the same believable and detailed created world, yet the budget of 8 million imposes certain restrictions on the game. The only thing that matters to us is to finally see the emotional end of the story of Ryo Hazuki, who has been searching for his father's killer for several years now.

Gears 5

Release date: 2019

Where to play: PC, Xbox One

Gears of War is another well-known series that will receive the expected sequel in 2019. Gears 5 may sound controversial, but in our opinion, this is exactly the sequel that the series has long wanted. The problem with Gears of War 4 was primarily that the developers decided to follow a proven program and released an almost complete clone of the already outdated Gears of War trilogy. The fifth part is already starting to amaze with the protagonist in the person of Kate Diaz and a great pressure on the plot full of drama.

The game will unfold among the wastelands, glaciers and ancient ruins on the Locust home planet - Sulfur. As the developers emphasize, in Gears 5 players will find the most beautiful and diverse world in the history of the series. It is also expected that locations will be overgrown not only with polygons, becoming even more detailed, but also noticeably increase in size. Essentially, almost every level will be a small sandbox that can significantly update the mechanics of the series. If the developers of The Coalition manage to bring a bit of innovation, but at the same time not lose the former brutality, then we will face a clear contender for the best game of 2019.

Nioh 2

Release date: 2019

Play: Playstation 4

The long-suffering Japanese project Nioh has been in development for over 13 years, but unlike another long-term project like Duke Nukem Forever, Nioh was waiting for an unusually warm welcome from the players. The concept familiar to Souls games was combined with a deep combat with several fighting stances, a setting of a fantasy Japan of the Sengoku period and an intriguing plot ... Okay, let's face it, the plot was one of the main problems, so the creators of the game promised to give priority attention to working out the scenario in Nioh 2.

The developers have refrained from any details of the plot, but it is known that the protagonist will no longer be a fixed character. Players will be able to create the main character with their own hands. Otherwise, Nioh 2 will follow in the footsteps of the original game, expand the bestiary of opponents, diversify the palette of the game with picturesque locations and will delight with several innovations that the developers did not manage to implement in the original Nioh.
