Why watch The Promised Neverland?

Image

We recently added The Promised Neverland, aka Promised Dreamland, to our list of the best anime to discover the genre. Moreover, this young title had to compete with such mastodons as: "Cowboy Bebop", "Death Note", "Fullmetal Alchemist". “Does this kid anime really have something so special about it that it rivals the titles that always top the best anime lists? Or do you love lolikoooo? " ¬– someone will think.

In fact, "The Promised Neverlend" has all the makings of a good work, which can really be interesting to a wide range of viewers, and carries its own original ideas. We will now discuss why you should check out The Promised Neverland.

What are we dreaming about?

Before starting, I will say right away that you will have to spoil the first couple of episodes, because without this, there will be no global spoilers. We are shown a kind of shelter for children in which harmony reigns. Children live in it happily and carefree, despite the fact that they are all orphans. They are well-fed, well-dressed, friendly, occasionally take intelligence tests and have access to a large library. The shelter itself is located in the middle of a green field surrounded by a small forest, where children can play catch-up in peace.

All this comfort is supported by their kind teacher Isabella, whom everyone calls mom. Sadness in this place comes in one case - if someone finds parents, and with a heavy heart, the rest of the children let their stepbrothers and sisters go, even though they understand that everything is for the best. Is this not a dreamland?

Image

No. As it turns out, the shelter is nothing more than a farm for raising livestock for slaughter. Mom is the caretaker, intellectual tests are product quality control, and the whole area is surrounded by a huge wall. No parents exist ...

Once, when a mother takes one girl “to her parents”, she forgets the toy. The other two children, Emma and Norman, decide to catch up with her and give their beloved rabbit. Alas, they stumble upon a car where the girl's corpse lies. She has already been killed by demons, to whom both the farm and her mother are subject.

Children understand that their entire pink world is an illusion and they need to escape until they themselves are sent to slaughter.

This batch is remarkable in its concept, because children have to resist not just adults, but also the unknown. And yes, importantly, there is no fan service, Hallelujah! "You're an idiot? Fanservice in anime about children? ”- you ask. Well, damn it, they managed to insert it into "Created in the Abyss" ...

Normal children

In addition to the plot, I want to highlight the main characters. You know, for me little children, both in anime and in films, are a sore subject. I hate child characters, especially in anime, because they are either annoying or so typical that you've definitely seen them in other titles.

But in "The Promised Neverland" the main characters are an exception - they want to empathize. After all, they have lived in a lie all their lives, and when you find out such a truth, your nerves are not childish.

In the anime, the creators perfectly managed to convey the tension they experience. For example, when you have to pretend to your mother that everything is fine and they don't know anything, and when Isabella leaves, their legs give way from stress and it becomes difficult to breathe.

Our main characters are the idealist Emma, the calculating Norman and the walking and encyclopedia Rei, outwardly similar to Sasuke, who got fed up that everyone was pressing him by the throat against the wall in that meme. They are the smartest children of the orphanage, and it is on their shoulders that the organization of the escape falls. This trio is simply great in their beliefs and approaches to the situation. Yes, they look too smart for their 11 years old, but this is a plot convention.

Each of them is individual and has both its poles and minuses. Emma is physically well-developed, but too naive, Rey is reasonable but can drop everything in the middle of the process, and Norman is tactful, but at the same time prone to disappointment.

There is not only constant interaction between them, but also a conflict - Emma wants to take all the children out of the orphanage, but Rey completely rejects this idea when Norman supports Ray's position, but is still ready for Emma's sake to implement her previously failed desire.

In turn, mom - inspires cold horror, and you immediately understand that she is a demon, the worst overseer, because she always pretends that she loves and knows what will be best for you.

Behind the wall

Significantly, the anime is full of twists. It knows how to keep the tension and you will never get tired of watching it. Neverland evokes an emotional response - and this, together with the elaborate world and characters, makes it suitable for a wide audience.

In structure, it consists of constant riddles. The children have a problem, they solve it, and the way is open for them to three new problems. The anime has amazing suspense, and it is skillfully conveyed through the footage, showing horror and despair. Every appearance of Krona's mother or sister is alarming and makes you think that it is with them that you would rather never meet.

Image

The atmosphere is injected, injected, and then there is a twist, you opened your mouth, and the injection started again. And it is enhanced by musical accompaniment in the spirit of films by Stanley Kubrick or Alfred Hitchcock.

Little Princes and Princesses

The visual European style of anime and manga plays an equally important role. It's very enjoyable, fluid, and won't scare off those who generally criticize anime for its weird art. I noticed for a long time that people are attracted to the Western style of illustrating a work, and this is already enough for them to consider the series not "anime".

Image

Thank you for this to say to the manga artist Posuki Damidze, because she was inspired by the European art culture, and in particular by illustrations for the work of Antoine Saint-Exupery. In one of her interviews, she said:

“When I studied fine arts, I was fond of European artists, especially Rembrandt. My father also bought me a lot of Western video games as a child, which also influenced my vision of the style. Plus, I just love the illustrated version of The Little Prince.

Everyone or nobody

The most important thing that I really like about anime is that it is not empty and it has its own ideals. The leitmotif of the work is overcoming difficulties together, while maintaining our beliefs. The creators themselves say that the slogan of the project is "Friendship, Effort, Victory". And it is especially visible through Emma, who, despite everything, wants to save all the children from the orphanage. It is she who is not afraid to say that either the whole family or no one.

Image

Children know that there is no dreamland waiting for them behind the wall. For them, Neverled is what they were deprived of. Therefore, they will grab onto things that have not yet been taken away from them.

I really recommend watching this anime because it is fun for everyone. You will spend the whole day, but watch it in its entirety and you will not regret it. Then you read the whole manga and again you will be satisfied. The series can be mesmerizing, and heightens the atmosphere better than Ridley Scott's Alien. By the way, their concept is similar - to escape from someone who is stronger than you, to outwit someone who is smarter than you. The enemy will never give you a chance to know about your next move and will kill you at the right moment.

Image

Yes, maybe the concept itself seems kind of strange, but what genius things don't seem so?

I hope this is a reason for you to watch the anime "The Promised Neverland".
