Top Best Science Fiction & Fantasy Movies of 2017

From superhero to supernatural, 2017 has delighted science fiction and fantasy lovers with a wide variety of movie settings. There are underwater worlds and creatures inhabiting them, comedies taking place in heaven, and a submerged world.

In 2017 we saw a lot of surprises from filmmakers working in the sci-fi genres of cinema. Superhero films are conquering a new peak in popularity together, and are also becoming even more dramatic and at the same time much more exciting than ever.

Ghost stories have reached new heights, and the future looks so radiant and distant from reality, which we did not even dare to dream of, much less fear.

Below is our personal list of the best science fiction and fantasy movies. Unfortunately, none of the animated films made it to this top, although "Coco" got close enough.

But fortunately, the superhero film from DC made it into it, and the film from the X-Men franchise even ended up in the top ten, while the films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe remained in the second half of the list despite being released in rental of several of their best films at once (2017 was a very successful year for their genre!). As for the film, which topped the list of our top, then there is something to discuss. So let's get started!

17. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Luc Besson presented his new work in 2017, which followed "Lucy". "Valerian" is a brilliant work of the director, especially with regard to its visual side, which cannot be said about its intellectual component. It's not that this live adaptation of a French 60s comic looks flat, but rather too simple. Most of all, this sparkling space adventure with a lot of heroes was criticized precisely for the fact that the story itself is rather weak, but in general, everything is in order with the plot. The point is the two main characters of the film (Dane Dehan and Cara Delevingne, playing the roles of galactic heroes, Valerian and Laureline), who lacked depth, which did not allow the film to truly shine.

15 & 16. Temptation and the Shape of Water

2017 was not unique in terms of the fact that the characters of the films fall in love with the fantastic creatures of the water element. In 2016, "Mermaid" was released, but the films of 2017, based on fairy tales about lovers, immigrants from the depths of the sea, brought new colors to the fantasy genre.

Guillermo del Toro's film "The Shape of Water", which takes place in the era of the Cold War between the United States and the USSR, presents the love story of an ordinary but dumb girl and an amphibian. A beautiful and life-affirming plot, excellent work of the director, which, as we know, was awarded an Oscar, a very thoughtful visual solution of the film and camera work, all this together brought the film deserved recognition and laurels of success.

Agnieszka Smochinskaya's "Temptation", which was released in Poland not in the original language two years ago, is a dark musical fantasy horror comedy about two mermaid sisters who became performers in a nightclub. Both The Temptation and The Shape of Water will delight fans of the aesthetics of the films, but both also have a fullness of so-called adult content, which gives fans of Hans Christian Andersen with the remake of The Little Mermaid something more than nostalgic pleasure from watching good old fairy tales.

13 & 14. Thor: Ragnarok and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Part 2

The first Guardians of the Galaxy movie took the Marvel Cinematic Universe to new heights, opened the doors to new spaces where the Avengers superheroes run, and raised the franchise to a new level of popularity. Its sequel continues to focus on the film's comedic line with even more memorable moments, many of which are somehow related to Baby Groot. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 may not be as fresh as the original, but when it comes to the relationship with The Empire Strikes Back, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 does a lot better.

Released a little later than Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the third "solo" Thor film is also a success, but it is also much more cosmic. Incredibly funny, sometimes even overly immersed in self-parody, his characters and plot work to make the film the most attractive in every way for the viewer, as intended by the filmmakers.

12. Spider-Man: Homecoming

Another release of Marvel in 2017 was the first "solo" movie about Spider-Man, which also became part of the MCU. It can also be considered the best Spider-Man movie to date. Tom Holland as teenager Peter Parker, who tries to do even more than his genius is capable of making the film especially attractive to viewers. Homecoming, a comedy disguised as a typical blockbuster comic strip, has become one of the biggest surprises of the year for us.

11. Wonder Woman

After the frustrations of both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, the Expanded Universe has taken a big step forward, as well as a huge breakthrough in female superhero films. A script from Alan Heinberg, directorial work by Patty Jenkins and brilliant Gal Gadot presented fans of the genre not only with a great picture, which takes place during the First World War and includes the development of the theme of the suffragist movement in England, but also many questions for thought. Wonder Woman is smart, elegant, and of course incredibly entertaining.

In the second part of our top fantasy and science fiction films, we'll cover the top ten. Wait, very soon on the site!
