A dream comic game or just another service? Marvel's Avengers Review

When Tony Stark put together his first iron armor from scrap metal, scotch tape and parole in an Afghan prison, it was rough, clumsy, but still amazing. It is with her that you can compare the recent Marvel's Avengers. A beautiful service game with a good storyline and a promising future, but far from perfect.

In this game, we met many familiar characters, costumes, enjoyed references, and also beat bad guys with great pleasure. In turn, the general impression was spoiled by errors, roughness, as well as problems with optimization and FPS drawdowns. So far, this game is rather crude, but taking into account that it has a service model, it is highly likely that in a year or six months it will be much better. Let's see in our review of Marvel's Avengers what it is: another service or game based on dream comics.

The attraction you play

The plot of the game begins during the celebration of Avengers Day. The heroes open a branch in San Francisco, and also launch the Chimera aircraft carrier. It also contains mysterious crystals.

Under strange circumstances, the reactor on the ship explodes. Most of the city is in ruins, tens of thousands of people die, and because of the consequences of the explosion, many receive powers that they cannot control. The Avengers are disbanded, and the AIM Corporation takes control of the world's security.

It should be noted that the first level in the game is a real attraction in the spirit of some Call of Duty. It is filled with a myriad of details designed to please the eyes of loyal Marvel comics fans, and to establish a crisp cinematic narrative. During it we will be allowed to play for each Avenger. The transitions between cut-scenes and gameplay are so smooth, and the adjusted moments themselves are so well-adjusted that it really seems like you are playing a movie.

But, in truth, after this you will hardly find such moments, since tension will arise only in a couple of three cases, according to the holy tradition of MCU films. The plot as a whole is quite cinematic and pleasant, it is easy to digest, but it is unlikely to reach the levels of The Last of Us or Red Dead Redemption 2.

The action takes place five years after the events of the tragic day. It is not hard to guess that our task will be to gather a team and expose AIM, as well as prevent the implementation of their diabolical plans. The story campaign follows the same patterns and follows the same tropes as comics and movies. There are a lot of well-choreographed cut-scenes, a few gripping moments, witty dialogues, and the characters are almost identical in character to the films.

The game runs briskly for 15 hours and at the later stages of the mission are focused not so much on the plot as on collecting resources for character development.

In general terms, Marvel's Avengers follows the beaten paths of Diablo or Destiny, where you control one of six available superheroes. What sets it apart from other similar games is the combat system.

We choose missions for passing, which most often take place in closed locations where we have to kill enemies, destroy reactors. Sometimes there are some additional actions, such as solving simple physics puzzles to open a room with a loot chest. After completing a mission, players receive rewards [materials, comics, or items]. Apart from select story missions, they can all be completed with three other friends. When playing alone, we are helped by a very capable AI. The choice of superheroes is completely up to us.

The basis of the game model is character development. Each character is pumped separately, unlocking additional attacks, combos or improvements. Collecting loot is also important, and just like loot shooters, loot is marked with colors that represent rarity.

There are vast opportunities in terms of creating heroes with specific abilities by choosing the right equipment and skill set, which allows you to focus on resilience to various elements of damage, increasing attack power, etc. Initially it doesn't really matter, but over time we should start paying attention to details as missions get harder and harder.

All together

Despite the slightly faded design, the Avengers are fine. All of them came out as good characters, both from a gameplay point of view and a storyline. For example, Nolan North [best known as the voice of Nathan Drake] as Tony Stark is great. Troy Baker [aka TLoU's Joel] as Bruce Banner [Hulk] did a really good job as well.

Fresh blood also pleased - Kamala Khan, who fights under the superhero pseudonym Miss Marvel. She is the comedic core of the team and her jokes are often funny. Kamala is a fan of the Avengers, knows many facts about them and often motivates them to new achievements. The chemistry between characters works.

Superhero beat'em up

Diablo or Destiny might have interesting character progression systems, tons of quests, and a ton of exotic items, but all of this would be in vain if it weren't for the bouncy combat systems. Fortunately, in Marvel's Avengers, the combat system is its main advantage and, in principle, an excuse to beat the game. For crushing opponents with each of the Avengers is a pleasure.

Often games of this genre require players to perform difficult combinations, but Marvel's Avengers does not require excessive efforts from gamers, but also offers a challenge, increasing the difficulty of performing techniques at later levels. However, this is not Yakuza, much less Street Fighter.

It doesn't make much sense to rant about battles, just say that they bring great pleasure. The enraged Hulk actually looks like an indestructible monster, Thor's hammer makes pleasant metallic sounds, and Iron Man's laser instantly vaporizes the thugs. The fight for Iron Man, I generally think the most enjoyable in the whole game, and as for me it is great, since many, on the contrary, were sure that the gameplay for him would be boring. I'm glad it didn't come true. It cannot be compared with the beauty of Marvel's Spider Man, but there is a certain charm in switching from one character to another during the battle.

Image

In addition, superheroes have an interesting way to empower each other by taunting enemies, healing allies or strengthening them. This solution works especially well when we are playing with friends or random players from all over the world. However, if someone prefers single player, the AI is quite capable of doing this too.

Work and work

Fortunately, there are no bugs in the game, but it is full of other unpleasant moments. Combat can get promiscuous in the heat of battle with all the effects. The game can sometimes look pretty mediocre, and the rooms of the subsequent laboratories that we explore are completely unremarkable. Every hour the interior becomes more and more monotonous. For me, the most unpleasant moment was not the best optimization and the subsequent terrible FPS drawdown, which is very annoying during battles.

The interface also seems a little rough, as it might not display key information ... all of these issues in Marvel's Avengers are getting even more acute on the cusp of the next generation.

Image

However, given that more and more characters will be added to the game, everything is ahead of her. After the completion of the main storyline for each hero there is a separate branch of tasks, plus even before the release a special story campaign with Hawkeye and Spider-Man was announced [sorry, only for PS4]. These will be full-fledged heroes with their own full-fledged mechanics, and, according to the leaks, there will be a dozen more. Therefore, it makes sense to fix all the described problems in the game in order to keep the project viable and arouse the interest of the players. Soon this Macr 1 will turn into Mark L, and the game itself will be less like the first films about Thor, and more like "Thor: Ragnarok".
