Finnish brand revives the legendary Nokia N9 smartphone

The popular electronics brand plans to give a second chance to the Nokia N9 smartphone, first introduced in 2011. The modern version of the device appeared at the profile exhibition CES 2019. Finnish Nokia continues to develop the concept of re-launching updated versions of its early phones, having already presented modern versions of the 3310 and 8110 models over the past two years.

Smartphone N9 released in 2011 has become one of the iconic devices of the famous brand, having received a high international rating, including in USA. For its time, Nokia N9 was distinguished by quite serious technical stuffing, which gave it a number of competitive advantages and allowed it to take an honorable place among the best devices on the market.

In its arsenal was a 1450 mAh battery, a 3.9-inch display covered with Gorilla Glass protection, 1 GB of RAM and up to 64 GB of internal storage. The Nokia N9 camera of the 2011 version has become another hallmark of the smartphone. The main module with an 8 MP sensor was complemented by autofocus, dual flash and Zeiss branded optics.

The third competitive characteristic that the manufacturer wanted to play on was software. The Nokia N9 smartphone differed from the previous models of the Finnish brand and operated on the open source MeeGo operating system. MeeGo was created as a multifunctional system with wide functionality and as a full-fledged competitor to the well-known iOS, Android and Windows Phone systems.

It is possible that the updated N9 model will not become a smartphone at all, but a classic “dialer” without advanced options. As part of the international exhibition, where the successor to the previous Nokia first appeared, the 2019 version was next to the Nokia 8110 4G and JioPhone devices, operating on the basis of the KaiOS system. The firmware of Nokia N9 neighbors is not much different from the capabilities of phones with a basic set of tools.

Why HMD Global, which owns the Nokia brand, decided to re-release the Nokia N9, it is impossible to answer. However, the company's strategy to capitalize on the nostalgia of an older audience has been successful. So, in 2017, the second birth of the "immortal" device Nokia 3310 took place, a year later a stylized slider 8110 appeared, the same as that of the main character of the cult "Matrix". Perhaps the re-release of the modern version of Nokia N9 as a classic device is associated with the positioning of its predecessor, which was intended mainly for a younger audience and was not a serious business device.

HMD Global has scheduled the presentation of several Nokia brand smartphones for 2019. These will include available versions, mid-range models and top-end devices. So, during February, the first Nokia smartphone with a round hole for the camera on the device screen is expected to be released. But the most anticipated premiere should be the flagship Nokia 9 with a five-module camera, in which the arrangement of its modules resembles a revolving drum. Its announcement is also scheduled for February this year.
