Sony Xperia XZ3 Smartphone Preview

Sony's strategy of releasing flagship smartphones every six months means it won't have to wait long. However, this also means minimal changes between the two generations of devices. The Xperia XZ3 didn’t bring anything particularly interesting, but the differences do make the device better. Especially in terms of performance.

The Xperia XZ3 can be mistaken for just another Sony smartphone, but if you give it a chance and study it better, the opinion changes. The design of the device remains the same, but minor details change the perception. The 6-inch screen makes the device slightly larger compared to the Xperia XZ2, but it doesn't feel huge and awkward.

An aluminum frame is located around the edges of the case. The back surface is flat in the center and curves along the sides. The curved screen changes the way you interact with the device. In general, the smartphone is similar to the Galaxy S9 + in many ways, which is good. Some reviewers even believe that the metal, glass design and method of combining them together is a level higher than that of Samsung. The Japanese manufacturer's color choices are fantastic. Available in all black, pleasant sea green and silver white. Each one has a pleasant finish and color depth.

For the first time, a Sony smartphone has an OLED screen. It looks great, but at this level with such a price it shouldn't be otherwise. The developers have reduced the size of the bezels at the top and bottom, as a result of which the edges of the XZ3 are more reminiscent of other flagship devices. The large screen was able to fit into a smaller body, especially given the improved speakers.

New functionality called Side Sense is reminiscent of HTC Edge Sense. It allows you to press on the edges of the case to perform different actions without having to press a button. Sony offers pretty basic features. Double tapping with your finger on any edge opens a menu with available applications. This is similar to the Edge panels on Samsung Galaxy devices.

Unfortunately, the stability of this function is far from 100%. You need to firmly double-tap, which can be difficult on a smartphone with such a thin metal frame. The idea was good, it would make the device more flexible in settings. Unlike HTC U12 +, this is not an integral part of the navigation system, so you can do without this feature.

The device is coming to Android 9 Pie, which gives it an edge over other flagships, including the recently released ones still on the previous version of Android. Sony's software is fast and clean, not much different from what you find on Google Pixel smartphones. Of course, there are some additions from Sony here.

There is also a catch. I didn't like the location of the fingerprint sensor, which is too low on the back of the case, like on the Xperia XZ2. There is no headphone jack. The screen looks great, but there was little time to get familiar with it. If you look at the past Sony devices, the readability in the sun is far from the best. Perhaps moving to an OLED panel will remedy this situation.

The 3300 mAh battery life is also a concern. There are doubts about the merits of the camera. Shooting in a pavilion at an exhibition in Berlin in low light showed a slow camera, there is digital noise in the photos. You don't expect that from a $ 900 smartphone.

Looking at the Xperia XZ3, one wonders if this is too little or too late to save Sony's mobile division. The company has been releasing expensive and not very attractive smartphones for too long, which did not have a chance to attract the attention of a wide range of buyers. Many flaws have since been corrected, but it is not easy to fix a reputation. The Xperia XZ3 looks and feels like a good smartphone, even better than many of the competition. It has no stupid mistakes like the bad location of the NFC antenna or the lack of a fingerprint scanner on the American version. There is support for memory cards, stereo speakers, a screen without a cutout, modern software, wireless charging and much more. Can't find critical flaws here.

It remains only to see whether those who are willing to spend on the purchase of the Galaxy Note 9 for 70,000 rubles. change your mind and give a little less for the Xperia XZ3.
