Do you want to quickly build muscle and become stronger? VR to help

A UK team has found evidence that using virtual reality during exercise can increase a person's stamina and reduce pain.

A team of scientists led by Maria Matsangidu, Ph.D. from the University of Kent, modeled a dedicated virtual sports environment.

During the experiment, 80 subjects performed the same strength exercises - lifting and holding heavy weights. It turned out that those athletes wearing a VR headset were able to hold the weight on average one minute longer. At the end of the workout, they said they felt about 10% less pain than during normal sports.

Today, virtual reality technology is used in various scenarios when it is necessary to distract a person's attention from the surrounding reality. VR is widely used for medical purposes, in particular for pain relief. However, scientists warn that in some cases, the human brain can get confused between conflicting signals that the body sends and that the visual apparatus perceives through the headset. This dissonance can cause feelings of disorientation, dizziness, and anxiety. This is a serious problem and many companies are currently working on solving it.

A study by British scientists once again confirms that virtual reality can deceive the brain and create conditions for a person when habitual stimuli are perceived quite differently. Further work by the British could lead to consumer VR products designed to help people actively exercise and build muscle quickly with minimal discomfort. Such applications would be useful for those who avoid physical activity due to lack of motivation or unwillingness to experience muscle pain.

Existing VR applications can only help with the issue of motivation. And specialized equipment, weight kits and sensors working in conjunction with a headset are what we may see in the near future.
