Artificial intelligence instead of a doctor?

European and American patients are unprepared for the introduction of artificial intelligence regimens, researchers report to Syneos Health Communications.

Why don't people trust AI?

As it turned out during the survey, clients of medical institutions are wary and mistrustful of the use of robotics and other high technologies that can replace a doctor. However, some patients are willing to overcome their fears when it comes to technology that only serves as a nurse. The survey included 800 patients with various medical conditions and 200 caregivers caring for people suffering from Parkinson's disease.

Who was interviewed?

The respondents included patients with type 2 diabetes, breast cancer, and atrial fibrillation. Of these, just under 20% reported finding the use of AI useful for diagnosis and treatment. The reasons for such a wary attitude towards modern medical technologies are the lack of patient awareness and the fear of machine error.

In the course of the survey, patients were asked to indicate the degree of trust in a number of medical and technology companies. Vendors of virtual assistants and medical robotics were at the bottom of this list, while real doctors and pharmacists were the most trusted. Interestingly, 64% of the respondents do not see anything intimidating in replacing a nurse or a nurse with a virtual assistant. This would provide 24/7 access to medical information, health monitoring, and medication reminders, patients said. At the same time, according to 72% of respondents, it is extremely important that the electronic assistant has a human voice, full of "confidence, warmth and care." For this group of respondents, voice matters more than name, gender or facial features.

Problems of AI in medicine

The problem of introducing artificial intelligence into the medical field is related to ethical issues. AI is an incredibly powerful and effective tool with the ability to self-learn and eliminate errors associated with misdiagnosis. Regardless, people do have a fear of it, and a Syneos Health Communications study makes it clear where tech corporations need to move to make the advancement of AI into the medical field successful.
