Why is the movie great? A hallucinogenic, sci-fi novel similar to Kafka's novels by writer Jeff Vandermeer provides fertile ground for director Alex Garland in his surreal adaptation.

Garland, in turn, is not too committed to the plot of the book, he is more interested in the main concept: a group of women, including the eternally sad professor of biology, played by Portman, embarks on an expedition to the quarantine territory in Florida, otherwise known as "Area X" to investigate a series of unknown phenomena taking place there, as well as disappearances. It quickly becomes clear that such an undertaking is dangerous and that the group will not be able to get out of there unharmed.

Working in a manner similar to John Carpenter's "The Thing", the film is startling and frustrating at the same time. The director denies the opportunity to provide the viewer with the puzzle search that he is so used to. Instead, the film leaves us alone with psychedelic imagery: grotesque hybrids of animals lurking in wait for prey, strange people transforming into flowers. Like 2001: A Space Odyssey by Kubrick, Garland's film dares to dream in a language we can barely understand.

The First Reformed Church

Why should you watch this movie? In an ascetic tale of a pastor in crisis of faith, screenwriter and director Paul Schroeder returns to familiar territory: his most acclaimed work as screenwriter for the 1976 film Taxi Driver created a portrait of a man consumed by rage, destroyed by feelings of guilt and resentment by condition. the world. In The First Reformed Church, Hawke's army priest Toller is overwhelmed by the death of his son. At this point, a young environmental activist stands in his way, and Toller plunges headlong into his problems.

Schroeder again returns to the questions that have appeared more than once in his films, but this time the tape was filmed in a more restrained stylistic manner than his previous films. He uses the same cinematographic means that he himself once studied and described in detail as a critic in his book "Transcendental Style in Cinema".

He approaches the film like Robert Bresson and Theodore Dreyer, exploring anxiety, addiction and controversy. In this movie, according to Schroeder, he tried to show "the maximum mystery of being." I must say that the mission is carried out with great zeal and in the final moments it amazes with a shocking force.

The power of the Rider's authenticity, which portrays the life of the real cowboy Brady Jandro as a traumatized rodeo star who wants to get back in the game, is completely balanced by the poetic nature of the filming, which never gets pesky or tries to manipulate the viewer's perception. Zhao's camera captures the moments when Jandro and his family are in pain, contemplating, or relaxing with equal interest.

Everything is important and everything has weight in this exploration of masculinity and ego. This is a naturalistic vision of the West, drawn in detail, like the one that shows the work with the horse at the very beginning of this process. At the same time, Jao gives the film an almost classic storytelling style: can Brady, a talented young athlete, be able to compete and perform again?

If he doesn't follow his dream, what will be left? Why continue? These are the questions that gather power in every seemingly minor scene in the film.

Why is this movie a must-see? You've watched action thrillers, but you've never seen a Lynn Ramsey movie like this. The Scottish filmmaker, first discovered by many in the 2002 film Morvern Collard, has a new perspective on a long-standing topic. This crime story, an adaptation of a novel by John Ames, tells the story of ex-soldier Joe (Phoenix), whose task is to free a kidnapped girl and at the same time a serious political game is taking place around, which includes human trafficking.

The tone of the painting, with its fixation on violent revenge, is reminiscent of Taxi Driver, last year's kill-them-all "Logan" from the X-Men series. It seems to be nothing new and not. What, then, makes a film different from others? The silent role of Phoenix, Johnny Greenwood's incredible soundtrack and Ramsey's expressive footage create their own effect, where each image is filled with energy and style. Death-obsessed cinema, fully saturated with life.

Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival. The film's script also won the top award at the same festival.
