Fifth generation (5G) mobile networks are still at the development stage, but the first of them should begin full-fledged work in 2019.

As for USA, the company " Megafon " has already acquired frequencies for their deployment, and the first experimental network should be operational by the start of the World Cup in June this year. The main stage of the deployment of 5G networks in USA is scheduled for the period from 2020 to 2025 . The number of 5G subscribers is expected to reach one billion worldwide by 2023.

New networks - new devices

New mobile devices will be required to support new standards and speeds. Many smartphone manufacturers are already developing models to support fifth generation networks. In particular, Huawei plans to introduce its first 5G smartphone in the third quarter of 2019. The company works closely with the world's leading mobile operators and academic institutions to develop 5G solutions.

It should be said that by the end of 2018, ZTE promises to present its smartphone model with support for fifth generation networks. It is known that ORRO is also involved in the development of such devices.

What chip makers are saying

Qualcomm announced the release dates for the first 5G devices . According to representatives of a well-known manufacturer of hardware filling for mobile devices, the first smartphones will appear by the end of this year after the launch of the first segments of new generation commercial networks.

At the moment, the issue of the maximum data transfer rate in 5G networks is being resolved. Most likely, the speed will be 2 or 4 Gbps . In theory, subscribers will be able to receive data at up to 4 Gbps , but in practice this figure will be slightly lower.

Qualcomm already introduced the first 5G modem a few months ago. The model was named Snapdragon X50 and in the course of testing allowed to achieve a transfer rate of 4.5 Gbps . The chip is planned to be used in their smartphones by HTC, ASUS, LG, Xiaomi, Sony, ZTE, OPPO and others.

MediaTek keeps up

The well-known chip manufacturer MediaTek has plans to release processors for smartphones with 5G support. The company plans to present its solutions for the commercial market by the end of the year. MediaTek 5G chips will be manufactured using 7nm technology.

The company also pays special attention to the development of chips for operations with artificial intelligence. The recently unveiled 12nm MediaTek Helio P60 chip has built-in NeuroPilot AI to accelerate face, emotion and other AI-related functions in mobile devices.
