Bethesda Sues Westworld Developers For Stealing Fallout Shelter Code

Bethesda has filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. and the Behavior Interactive team. The publisher accuses them of using the Fallout Shelter code for mobile strategy Westworld.

Litigation between game companies is hardly surprising today, but rarely is it as interesting as the case between Bethesda Softworks and Warner Bros. / Behavior Interactive.

The case concerns the mobile strategy Westworld, released a few days ago. The game is based on the popular TV series. Bethesda claims that this title is a clone of its Fallout Shelter project. One glance is enough to see the obvious similarities between the two games.

Both titles are economic strategy games where you need to manage small groups of characters. The gameplay, camera view and even visual style are similar. In this case, however, the lawsuit concerns much more serious things, since it is a question of stealing code.

Behavior Interactive, responsible for Westworld, was hired in 2014 to develop Fallout Shelter along with Bethesda's internal team. Since the project was funded by the publisher from the beginning, all code generated during production is also the property of this company.

When developing Westworld, Behavior Interactive had to start from scratch without using the code that Bethesda paid for. Usually such cases are quite difficult to prove, but in this situation there should be no problems: it turns out that the technical errors in Westworld are identical to those that appeared in the early version of Fallout Shelter.

Bethesda's requirements are simple: Westworld should be removed from the market, and part of the profits that the game managed to bring to dishonest developers should be compensated to the owners of the code. As a reminder, Westworld was released on June 21 for iOS and Android mobile systems. Both platforms use a free micropayment model.
