MacBook Pro was banned from taking with you on the plane due to the threat of spontaneous combustion

In the US airlines, the MacBook Pro has become an undesirable person - in the country there is an official ban on its transportation on airplanes. We are talking about 15-inch models, and even then not all, but only those whose battery is defective. Such a malfunction of the batteries causes the gadget to overheat, leading to the threat of spontaneous combustion.

In world practice, several such cases have already been recorded, as a result of which the owners of MacBooks were injured. Thus, the restrictions apply to laptops recalled by Apple for repair. They cannot be carried on board "on hand" and cannot be left in your checked baggage. At the same time, the ban will not apply to laptops in which the defective battery is replaced with a quality one.

MacBook Pro Not Logged In

All 15-inch MacBook Pro models with Retina displays that were manufactured and sold over the period from September 2015 to February 2017 were sanctioned. These laptops are subject to a greater fire hazard due to poor quality batteries, which can become very hot and then ignite the device. In June of this year, Apple began a project to recall these MacBooks to replace defective batteries.

As part of this project, the corporation invites all users who have dangerous models in their hands to contact branded service points for free battery replacement. The company does not specify the total number of devices with defective batteries, nor the timing of the campaign to replace the battery. However, users should be prepared to leave their Apple laptop in service for a few days, and they are advised to make backups to save important files.

To test if your MacBook Pro is at increased risk due to a defective battery and is eligible for free replacement, the following testing algorithm is provided. Initially, you should find out the serial number of the device in the "About This Mac" menu item. Then on the Apple website, the number can be inserted into a special form by clicking submit. Further instructions will appear if the laptop is in a high-risk area.

Explosive apples

The limitations of the MacBook Pro 15 on air travel are not only related to the campaign to recall them for a new battery. Basically, the ban is associated with the threat of an explosion of the gadget. A few days before the start of the campaign, a similar incident happened, which ended in a laptop explosion. According to its owner Steve Gagne, the MacBook was in sleep mode, closed and not connected to electricity. Fortunately, only the table was damaged as a result of the incident. According to the owner, the battery got hot for no apparent external reason.

Two years earlier, in the spring of 2017, another case of fire with the participation of a MacBook Pro became known, but this time it was not without damage to the interior. The gadget caught fire almost in the hands of its owner, programmer Daniel Dourvaris, although until the last moment there were no signs of possible danger. It all started with a sudden shutdown of the MacBook. After the device was restarted, its owner spoke of strange noises, white smoke and then flames. Dourvaris managed to react quickly and threw the gadget on the floor before the subsequent explosion, although burns still could not be avoided. An investigation into the incident showed that the battery was the cause, namely the deformation of one of its cells.
