The Solitaire card game, which has helped generations of office workers to portray serious busyness at work, has made it to the award. The iconic Klondike Solitaire has won recognition and a well-deserved place in the New York Video Games Hall of Fame. An indispensable companion to almost every version of Windows, starting with build 3.0, the game has won an honorary award for "longevity, vast geography and significance."
The classic computer "Klondike" Windows appeared in the early 90s in Windows 3.0. It was written by Microsoft intern Wes Cherry. Since that moment, solitaire has received truly worldwide recognition. There are more than one billion devices on which the game is installed, Solitaire has been adapted in 65 languages, and the number of games played in a year reaches 35 billion.
Initially, the Klondike game was conceived as a kind of simulator for getting used to a computer mouse and controlling objects within the framework of the new system interface. The game was bundled with every Windows by default, except for build 8.1. After a while, solitaire along with other mini-games, including Minesweeper, again completed the now tenth version of Windows.
The Video Game Hall of Fame was founded in 2015. The creation of the site was initiated by the National Museum. Its concept from the very beginning provided for the inclusion of the most popular and cult representatives of the family of electronic games of any type there. Favorites were determined based on the recommendations of profile bloggers, journalists and researchers, although anyone has the opportunity to suggest their own candidate. The hall has already seen projects that have loudly declared themselves in the gaming industry, including such "celebrities" as Doom, GTA III, World of Warcraft and others.
This year, Klondike Solitaire won a place of honor in the Hall of Fame along with other winners of the nomination. Among them were the brutal Mortal Kombat, the Colossal Cave Adventure quest and the Super Mario Kart arcade. Interestingly, solitaire together with Mortal Kombat were already nominated in 2017, but then the experts voted for other representatives of the gaming industry.
