Scarfaces Remake Lost Director Again

Image The long-suffering search for a director for the remake of Scarface continues. According to the information portal The Hollywood Reporter , David Eyre ("Suicide Squad"), who signed up to shoot just a few months ago, left the project.

According to the site, the stumbling block was that the vision of Eyre was "too dark" for the studio. Although given that Scarface , as one insider put it, is theThe Holy Grail of Modern Gangster Cinema, a certain amount of grimness was necessary.

On the other hand, sources of the publication Variety cite a mismatch in working schedules as the reason for the director's departure from the project. Eyr is currently busy with the upcoming release of the fantastic action movie Brightness for the streaming platform Netflix starring Will Smith, and the studio just can't wait. Whatever the reason, the director's chair for the remake of classic gangster story is free again.

Scarface chronicles the rise and fall of the king of the drug business, a gangster named Tony Montana . The film is based on the novel of the same name by Armitage Trail, which had been screened twice before - in 1932 and in 1983. The latest adaptation was directed by Brian De Palma and starred by Al Pacino.

The studio Universal announced plans to shoot a new version back in 2011. Since then, David Eyre , Paul Attanasio, Jonathan Herman, Terence Winter have worked on the script himself, and the last edits were made by Joel and Ethan Coens. The search for the director of the picture also dragged on. Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), David McKenzie (Last Love on Earth) and Peter Berg (Hancock) have held the directorial positions at various times. However, they all dropped out of the project for various reasons.

Diego Luna (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) is still listed as the lead actor at this point, and is produced by Dylan Clarke and Martin Bregman, who worked on the 1983 version. The studio will have to start looking for a director again in the hope of finally launching the filming process this fall.

The release of the picture is scheduled for August 10, 2018 .
