Apocalypse in Texas

Image Director Jaume Collet-Serra is best known to moviegoers for such action films with Liam Neeson as "Unknown", "Air Marshal" and "Night Fugitive". Last year, the filmmaker moved away from the action genre, returning to horror films, from which he began his career in big cinema. His thriller, The Shoal, was an unexpected summer hit. Now Collet Serra is going to explore new territory and film a historical drama.

As reported by the Deadline website, the director will lead the production of a film titled Waco ( Waco ) for Annapurna Pictures , one of the most ambitious and fastest growing modern studios. The script was written by Oscar winner Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker), who is no stranger to adapting stories based on real events. Mark Hames ("Kubo. The Legend of the Samurai") helped him in his work.

The film will focus on the tragic events that unfolded near the Texas city of Waco in 1993, where the Branch of David sect headed by David Koresh settled. The group, an offshoot of the Seventh-day Adventist Church , soon came to be viewed by the federal government and law enforcement agencies as a threat.

The attempted raid ended in a gun battle that claimed the lives of four agents and six members of the sect. However, this was only the beginning - the FBI siege the Mount Carmel ranch, where the sect was located. It lasted 51 days and ended in a massive fire, which killed most of the adepts, including Koresh himself.

“The Waco tragedy is a turning point in the history of confrontation between the FBI and the radical right forces of America,- says Boal . -This is a clash of military factions, the Second Amendment and the right to freedom of religion. Many said that the cult did not bother anyone, but in the film we will show why the FBI and Justice Department perceived them as a threat ".
