Long road to space

Image Amazon's online service management seems to be determined to take the lead in the global TV content market. The streaming giant recently paid $ 250 million for the rights to create a series based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, and is now embarking on an ambitious project about one of the biggest scandals in NASA's history.

According to the publication Deadline, the online service has begun work on the mini-series The Mercury 13 ("Mercury 13" *), which will be based on the novel of the same name by Martha Ackmann. The action of the TV project will unfold in the early 60s of the last century. In her work, the famous American journalist tells about thirteen female pilots who, following the first NASA astronauts, successfully passed three rounds of the most difficult tests for physical endurance and stress resistance. The public demanded that they be allowed to participate in the research mission "Mercury", but the space agency did not want to accept the fair sex in its program.

NASA's accusations of gender discrimination only intensified after Valentina Tereshkova went into space on June 16, 1963. The struggle for equality continued for another fifteen years, until in 1978 the overseas stellar department finally included several girls in its eighth set of astronauts. Sally Ride was honored to become the first American woman in space in 1983.

The miniseries showrunner will be Elizabeth Hannah. The name of the young screenwriter became known in Hollywood at the end of last year, when her "Secret Dossier" took one of the leading positions in the Black List of the best unrealized ideas of the Dream Factory. Later, Amy Pascal's company acquired the rights to the script for the historical drama about classified Pentagon files, and Steven Spielberg agreed to direct the film. The picture will hit wide screen only at the beginning of next year, but this does not prevent it from being considered almost the main favorite of the Oscar race.

Hannah's new biographical project will again be produced by Amy Pascal's studio. It is curious that at the moment another series is being prepared on American television about a group of female pilots who dreamed of getting into the Mercury program. ITV Studios America intends to compete between Amazon and Pascal Pictures.
