USAn box office: a hero defeated a scandalous ballerina

Image The past weekend for the USA film distribution turned out to be unusually successful. Not only were three domestic films in the top five, but the weekend itself became one of the most successful this year. The total fees exceeded the 1.17 billion rubles mark. - distributors have not seen such results since the end of May. Then the ball was ruled by the blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales", which set an absolute record for premiere fees. The film received 1.075 billion rubles at the start, while the total receipts for the weekend amounted to more than 1.256 billion rubles. This time, both the beginning of the school holidays and the curious list of new products, which could attract the most diverse audience, from children to those who like to tickle nerves, played into the hands. More than 70% of the total amount earned by cinemas last week came from USA cinema. The domestic film became the triumphant of the last October weekend.

The first place with a confident lead over the competitors was taken by the adventure comedy "The Last Bogatyr", which was produced by the USA division of Disney and the Yellow, Black and White film studio. Having invited such actors as Viktor Khorinyak, Mila Sivatskaya, Ekaterina Vilkova, Elena Yakovleva, Konstantin Lavronenko, Yevgeny Dyatlov and Sergei Burunov to his tape, director Dmitry Dyachenko filmed a good old fairy tale in a modern way. In the center of the story was an ordinary guy Ivan, who, by chance, is transferred from Moscow to the fantastic country of Belogorie. Baba Yaga, Koschey the Immortal, Water and Miracle Yudo live in a parallel world, and magic is an integral part of everyday life. Ivan finds himself drawn into the struggle between light and dark forces, absolutely not understanding why the main role in the events taking place, according to everyone's opinion, prepared for him.

“The Last Bogatyr” surpassed all the expectations of film distributors and analysts' forecasts, which predicted his fees of about 300 million rubles. The family tape managed to earn 460 million rubles during the premiere weekend, plus an additional 14 million rubles. from previews. As a result, Bogatyr's piggy bank has 474 million rubles, which is the best start of the year among USA films. Previously, the leading position was held by Fyodor Bondarchuk's science fiction film "Attraction" with 408 million rubles. Moreover, the fairy tale about the son of the hero Ilya Muromets also showed the fourth start among USA films in the entire modern history of our film distribution. Only Viy (RUB 603 million), Stalingrad (RUB 525 million) and Ekipazh (RUB 501 million) debuted better.

Critics and viewers took the tape very favorably. Some, however, were offended by jokes designed for adults, but not for a child audience, sometimes weak graphics, ambiguous behavior of characters and a lot of various flaws. But still, reviewers note the ironic attitude of the filmmakers to what is happening, their mockery of genre cliches, the presence of really funny moments, well-staged fights that combine magic with martial arts, a vivid picture, a dynamic plot, the work of costume designers and make-up artists. The result is a decent, 100 percent entertaining movie for the whole family.

Unlike "The Last Hero", which managed to surprise not only the audience, but also film distributors, the historical melodrama "Matilda" started much weaker than expected. The release of the film directed by Alexei Uchitel, the plot of which revolves around the relationship between Tsarevich Nikolai Alexandrovich and the ballerina Matilda Kshesinskaya, was accompanied by global hype, inspections by the prosecutor's office and protests from all kinds of religious organizations, which greatly crippled the advertising campaign of the film. Although what has been happening in recent months on the Internet and on TV, it is difficult to perceive other than a competent PR campaign, which, instead of distracting viewers from the project, on the contrary, attracted extraordinary attention to it. However, the attention was not enough, and, despite the fact that at first people very actively went to the cinema,
As a result, for the premiere weekend, the long-suffering tape with a budget of $ 25 million (about 1.5 billion rubles), managed to earn 241 million rubles, despite the fact that it was predicted to collect fees in the region of 400 million rubles. This is the fourth start among domestic films this year after the aforementioned "The Last Hero" and "Attraction" (474 million rubles and 408 million rubles, respectively), as well as "Salut-7", which brought the creators 256 million rubles on the premiere weekend.

Critics and viewers who have visited cinemas and watched the picture, for the most part, speak of it as an average, even mediocre melodrama, around which it was not worth making such a fuss. Among the pluses, the reviewers note, perhaps, only the excellent scenery and costumes, excellent camera work and a good cast, whose attempts to perform their roles well stumble upon a weak script with a lame plot and unsuccessful dialogues. Despite all the efforts and the huge production budget, the creators ended up with an indistinct picture with a chaotic narrative, lack of deep meaning and historical accuracy, full of melodramatic cliches.

Those who did not succumb to the hype around "Matilda" and prefer bloody horrors to fairy tales, went to the sessions of the next part of the "Saw" horror franchise last weekend. The final film in the series was to be Saw 3D, but Lionsgate Films couldn't stop and ordered another one. It is not surprising, because even before the release of the seventh part, the series of thrillers was entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the highest grossing horror film series of all time, which earned more than $ 730 million in worldwide box office and DVD sales. This time two directors took the director's chair at once, brothers Michael and Peter Spirigi, but the producers were the permanent Gregg Hoffman, Mark Berg and Oren Cowles, who worked on all the films in the franchise. According to the plot of Saw 8, several mutilated human bodies are found in the city. All evidence points to one person - John Kramer. However, the maniac known by the nickname Saw has been presumed dead for over ten years. Is Kramer alive, or is he just having a follower?

The new part of the bloody franchise debuted at the box office much better than the previous one. "Saw 8" over the weekend scared the audience in the amount of 131 million rubles, while the seventh film in 2010 was able to master only 67 million rubles at the start. In total, he earned then about 165 million rubles. The sixth showed itself much worse, having received 33 million rubles on the first weekend. and finished the procession through cinemas at the mark of 65 million rubles. So financially, the tape performed very well and was able to rehabilitate the horror franchise after the last failed parts. As for the reaction of the fans, it can hardly be called positive. Of course, the fans of the franchise were happy to renew the tradition of going to the next "Saw" on Halloween, but the creators could not offer the audience anything new. Reviewers note that the film has lost its former atmosphere, events in it develop chaotically, all those inventive traps for which horror is so famous, viewers could already contemplate in one form or another in the previous seven parts, and the final plot twist is guessed even in the middle of viewing. The fans did not appreciate the script, the acting, or the computer graphics. After the session, they had only a sense of deja vu and the thought that the franchise was long overdue.

Under the pressure of competitors, the leaders of the previous week have shifted to the fourth and fifth lines. In fourth place was the disaster film Geostorm, starring Gerard Butler. Over the past weekend, the tape received an additional 99 million rubles. All in all, at the moment, a fantastic action movie about saving the planet from a global natural disaster has managed to earn 469 million rubles.

Another USA picture closes the top five. The space drama Salyut-7 has been in the top for the third week in a row and still attracts a substantial number of viewers to cinemas. Although the collection of the picture sank by 60% compared to last weekend, the fearless cosmonauts performed by Pavel Derevyanko and Vladimir Vdovichenkov were able not only to save the Salyut-7 station, but also to bring 641 million rubles to the picture's piggy bank. Over the past weekend, the tape managed to master an additional 75 million rubles. Thus, the film has long surpassed the box office of its immediate rival - the film "Time of the First", which is another cosmic drama based on real events. To date, she has collected 562 million rubles in the USA box office.
