Sam Mendes talks about the creation of Cleopatra

Image Sam Mendes (American Beauty, 007: Coordinates of Skyfall) is about to invite viewers to the set of the historical epic Cleopatra. According to The Hollywood Reporter , the Oscar-winning filmmaker has accepted an invitation from Fox 2000 to produce the film adaptation of Jess Walter's bestselling book Magnificent Ruins .

" Cleopatra " held the title of the most expensive Hollywood film for 15 years. The famous Egyptian queen's biopic won four Oscars , but failed to recoup its production costs, which nearly led to the bankruptcy of 20th Century Fox .

Walter 's novel is set in two time periods. One part of the story takes place in the present, and the second - in 1962, when the film crew of " Cleopatra " was working in Italy. The main characters of the story were such fictional characters as Hollywood starlet Dee Morey , film producer Michael Dean and his assistant Claire Silver , and the author took the supporting roles real historical figures like Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

For a long time, the project was in development at the studio Cross Creek Pictures , which did not have the rights to mention " Cleopatra ". Now the film has moved under the wing of a subsidiary of 20th Century Fox , thanks to which it will not be about some fictional historical film, but about the epic of 1963.

The adaptation of Walter for the big screen is being done by screenwriters Noah Harpster and Mika Fitzerman-Blue ( Transparent ). Sources close to the leadership of Fox 2000 do not exclude that in the end Mendes will decide to act as not only the producer, but also the director of the film.

After saying goodbye to Bondiana, Sam is actively looking for new projects: in the last six months alone, he signed up to work on the thriller Voyeur's Motel and the children's fairy tale James and the Giant Peach.
