Fox was scared to make a movie about a kidnapping victim

Image It seems that a series of high-profile Hollywood sex scandals will lead to the fact that the leading film companies of the Dream Factory will no longer delight the public with films on complex and controversial topics. As it became known to Deadline, 20th Century Fox and its subsidiary studio Fox 2000 have stopped work on the abduction of the granddaughter of the famous media mogul William Randolph Hirst.

In the wake of the rapid growth in the popularity of movements in support of victims of violence and sexual harassment, Patricia Hirst released a statement in which she sharply criticized the film's producers. The plot of the picture was supposed to be based on the book by Geoffrey Tubin "The American Heiress: The Mad Saga of Kidnapping, Crimes and the Trial of Patty Hirst."“This piece romanticizes crime and makes my abduction a reckless adventure,” Hirst wrote.

Patricia was kidnapped by members of the Symbionist Liberation Army in 1974. After a couple of months, she took a new name and began to help her tormentors commit various crimes. One of them even ended in death. In September 1975, the heiress of the media empire, the Hearst Corporation, was arrested, shortly thereafter, declaring herself a victim of Stockholm Syndrome. As a result, she managed to avoid serious punishment and escaped with only 22 months in prison.

The reaction to Hirst's statement was immediate. “20th Century Fox and its partners have decided to cancel the movie based on the book The American Heiress,” reads a press release from the Hollywood major. The film was officially announced last month. His directorial chair was intended to be taken by James Mangold, and Elle Fanning was nominated for the role of the heiress of William Randolph Hirst's multimillion-dollar fortune. Fox bosses had planned to launch the biopic earlier this year, but now they have had to go along with the public.

Insiders do not exclude that the cancellation of the film may be related to a recent deal between Fox and Disney. The Walt Disney Empire closely monitors its reputation and could well insist on stopping work on the biographical drama in order to avoid participation in a loud scandal.
