Slaughterhouse Five Goes to TV

Image Despite the fact that only the first episode of Happy was released, the management of Universal Cable Productions was satisfied with the work of showrunner Patrick McManus and decided to entrust him with another project. As the Variety portal managed to find out, the producer is adapting another unusual work for small screens - the cult novel by Kurt Vonnegut “Slaughterhouse Number Five, or the Children's Crusade.

The book is about the time traveler Billy Pilgrim, who is jerkily transported from one period of his life to another. Either he works as an optometrist in New York, then he is imprisoned in a zoo on the planet Tralfamador, or he survives the bombing of Dresden during World War II. This period of Billy's life reflects the military experience of Vonnegut himself, who was captured and worked at a factory in Dresden.

Slaughterhouse Five was already screened in 1972 by director George Roy Hill, and Vonnegut himself later admired the film.

The original touches upon questions of fate, free choice, the consequences of war, the perception of time in general. Fiction, satire, philosophy are intertwined in it, and it seems that UCP has decided to create a very ambitious project. Gail Ann Heard (The Walking Dead), John Brown (Pompeii) and Bradley Yonover (The Fanatic) will help Patrick McManus with production. Notably, UCP has an adaptation of Sirens of Titan, another work by Vonnegut.
