Image Oscar Winner Mark Rylance , Director Ciro Guerra (Embrace of the Serpent) and Producer Michael Fitzgerald (" The Promise ”) will jointly transfer to the big screens the novel Waiting for the Barbarians by JM Coetzee.

The plot revolves around a judge from a small colonial town on the border of the so-called Empire. The authorities are declaring a state of emergency in connection with increased rumors of a possible attack by indigenous peoples, whom the local population calls barbarians. When a judge assists a barbarian girl who has suffered from torture, he begins to wonder if imperialism is so good and just. For betraying the protagonist, his own people are arrested, thrown into prison, and from a respected person he becomes a laughing stock for the crowd ...

Coetzee himself will adapt his work, and Rylance will play the main role in the film. The novel Waiting for the Barbarians has already become the basis for the opera, but has never made it to the big screens.
