Oscar - 2017 set a new record

Image The 89th Academy Awards will take place in just four and a half months, but it has already made its mark on the history of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences . As reported by Variety , academics have closed the call for applications for the Best Foreign Language Film category. For the first time, 85 films will fight for victory in this nomination. The previous record was set in 2014, when ribbons from 83 countries of the world got the chance to win the gold statuette.

The prize in the category "Best Foreign Language Film" will be drawn for the 60th anniversary time, since until the mid-1950s, the American Film Academy awarded non-English language films only with special awards. Among the main contenders for the " Oscar - 2017 " award critics name such films as "She" by Paul Verhoeven, "From Afar" by Lorenzo Vigas, "Chevalier" by Athena Rachel Tsangari, "Sea on Fire" by Gianfranco Rosie, Juliet by Pedro Almodovar, Neruda by Pablo Larrain, Traveling Salesman by Asgara Fahradi, It's Only the End of the World by Xavier Dolan and Tony Erdmann by Maren Ade. Last month it became known that USA in the race for the most valuable film award in the world will be presented by Andrei Konchalovsky's war drama Paradise.

At the end of December, academics will reduce the number of contenders for the title of best foreign film from 85 to nine. The five finalists will be announced on January 24 when the Oscar nominees for this and other categories are announced.
