Terry Gilliam finished shooting the film about Don Quixote

Image Terry Gilliam ("Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus") has finished filming his long-suffering project entitled "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote", writes the Screen Daily.

“I apologize for the long silence ... After 17 years, we finished shooting “ The Man Who Killed Don Quixote ” . Muchas gracias to the entire film crew and those who believed in us. Don Quixote is alive! ”, the director wrote on his Facebook page.

A little later, he added:Don Quixote is a dreamer, idealist and romantic, who decided not to accept the limitations of reality, continuing to move on despite the setbacks. We did exactly the same. All this lasted so long that the very idea of finally completing this "secret" film seemed very surreal. Any sane person would have given up years ago, but sometimes stubborn dreamers win in the end. So thank you to everyone who was sick with this ill-paid fantasy and believed, who participated in making this old dream a reality! ”.

The first attempt to make a film about Don Quixote was made by Gilliam back in 1998, when Johnny Depp was to play one of the main roles. The filming of the project began two years later, but due to problems both with funding and on the set (most of the scenery was damaged by floods, and the leading actor, Jean Rochefort, suffered a serious spinal injury), they had to be stopped. This story was even recorded in the 2002 documentary Lost in La Mancha.

For the next 17 years, the director repeatedly tried to return to filming, but each time certain circumstances arose that forced him to retreat. During this time, the performers of the main roles also changed several times. Among the actors assigned to the project were the names of Robert Duvall, Ewan McGregor, John Hurt and Jack O'Connell.

Yet in May last year, Gilliam announced that he was starting to shoot the picture. The leading roles eventually went to Adam Driver ("Paterson", "Star Wars: The Force Awakens") and Jonathan Price ("Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl"). Olga Kurylenko (Oblivion) and Stellan Skarsgard (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) will also appear in the film.

Written by Terry Gilliam and Tony Grisoni, the film tells the story of a bewildered old man who is convinced that he is Don Quixote . He mistakes the young marketer Toby for his loyal servant Sancho Panza . The couple embarks on a strange journey, moving between the 21st and magical 17th century. Gradually, like the Knight of the Sorrowful Image himself, Toby is drawn into an illusory world and ceases to distinguish between dream and reality.

The film is tentatively due out in 2018, but there is no exact release date yet. We can only hope that the post-production of the film will not drag on for another long 20 years.
