Sony Pictures has abandoned its plans to release a feature movie dedicated to the famous Barbie doll in August 2018. According to The Wrap, the premiere of the movie has been postponed to May 8, 2020 without explanation.

The movie has no direct competitors in this "rental window". Anne Hathaway is still starring and Alethea Jones is the director. Whether they will remain participants in the project after the change in the rental schedule was not known at the time of this writing. The plot of the project, which is characterized as "feminist", was not specified. Earlier it was assumed that Barbie would find herself in the human world, since her physical parameters no longer corresponded to the ideas of beauty in the universe where dolls live.

Recall, that Sony Pictures, together with Barbie brand and Mattel, have been trying to produce a feature-length feature movie for years. For the first time, such plans were reported back in 2009. In 2016, it was announced that the title role would be played by Amy Schumer. But the actress left the project in 2017.

The world famous Barbie doll was introduced to consumers in 1959 and quickly became one of the most popular and best-selling toys.
