In a big balloon

Image More than a quarter of a century has passed since the end of the Cold War, but artists continue to have a huge interest in the key international conflict of the second half of the 20th century. In the middle of this month, we reported that the BBC and AMC TV channels intend to shoot a mini-series "The Spy Who Came from the Cold" about the confrontation between British and East German intelligence officers, and today it became known that that 20th Century Fox is preparing a film about one of the most famous attempts to escape from the GDR to the FRG.

According to Deadline , the Hollywood major has acquired the rights to the screenplay by Joe Ballarini (Party Inferno), which tells how, in 1979, two West German families implemented a clever plan to overcome the Berlin Wall. The plot of the tape, tentatively titled Skyward , will be based on real events that happened to the mechanic Peter Strelzhik and the bricklayer Gunter Wetzel.

Tired of life behind the Iron Curtain, Shooter and Wetzel began looking for a way to get their families out of the German Democratic Republic. After going through many options, Peter and Gunther settled on the idea of creating a homemade balloon. In order not to attract the attention of Stasi agents, they had to buy parts for the construction of an aircraft in different districts of the GDR.

The first two attempts to make a balloon at home ended in failure. First, Peter and Gunther chose the wrong material for the casing, and then they miscalculated the size of the basket. Fearing that the secret police were interested in why they were purchasing raincoat fabric in industrial quantities, Strelzhik and Wetzel decided to speed up the pace of work. The escape was scheduled for September 15, 1979, but during takeoff, the balloon burst into flames from a burner. Fortunately, Peter 's eldest son had a fire extinguisher at hand. At an altitude of 2000 meters, the burner ran out of gas, after which the balloon began to rapidly fall down. Luck was again on the side of the fugitives. The balloon managed to fly to the Federal Republic of Germany, and the landing was quite soft,
In 1982, the fascinating story of the escape from the GDR already became the basis for the plot of the drama "Crossing the Border". John Hurt and Beau Bridges starred in Delbert Mann's film.

The functions of the producer of the tape Skyward will be taken over by Karen Rosenfelt, whose track record includes the "Twilight" franchise and the war drama "The Book Thief".
