A stranger among his own

Image Recently, Hollywood studios and leading online services have begun to increasingly raise issues of racial discrimination and police violence in their films and series. As it became known to the edition Deadline , the film company Fox Searchlight is ready to present its view on the pressing problems of American society. The California studio begins work on the adaptation of Dick Lehr's novel The Fence .

The work of the Boston journalist is based on real events that took place in the capital of Massachusetts. On January 25, 1995, 911 received a message that a bloody gang showdown had taken place in the Dorchester area. Several police squads were involved in a raid to find the participants in the incident. Soon one of them bumped into an African American who was trying to climb over a fence in a gateway near the crime scene.

One of the police officers hit the suspect in the back of the head, after which the rest of the servants of the law followed suit. As a result, they nearly beat the man to death. Subsequently, it became known that their colleague Michael Cox had fallen under the hot hand of the Boston cops. On that day, a dark-skinned police officer was working in civilian clothes and found himself near the ill-fated fence, trying to catch up with the real criminal.

The Boston Police Department not only did not fire any of the officers who participated in the beating of Cox , but also covered up their crime in every possible way. As a result, Michael filed a civil suit against his colleagues.

The adaptation of Dick Lehr for the big screen will be handled by George Pelecanus (The Wire) and Dennis Lehane (Isle of the Damned), while the biographical drama will be directed by Peter Nix, who previously worked in the documentary world.
