Ten Movies You May Have Missed in 2016

Image LostFilm.INFO presents to your attention a selection of films that were released domestically in 2016, but without much hype, and therefore could have been overlooked by film fans. Meanwhile, critics of the projects presented below were mostly enthusiastic, and some of the paintings on our list were even awarded various prestigious awards.

Here you will not find a single sequel, triquel or reboot - only original, mostly author's tapes, each with its own character and mood, touching upon issues that are truly important for a modern person.

Cold Front

Perhaps, there is not a single film fan in USA who does not know the name of Roman Volobuev - a critic who has reached unprecedented heights in reviewing films of any genre and budget. In the past year, Roman Olegovich presented his fans with an unprecedented surprise - his own directorial debut. Cold Front is a multi-genre chamber story about a couple having a showdown in front of a third, bisexual person in a gray French hinterland. The heroes talk, quarrel, change clothes, listen to the local radio - in general, they behave like the characters of a typical independent European cinema. Accordingly, it is necessary to watch this picture, focusing not on the plot, but on the visual component, musical design and psychologism. And with that, Volobuev is all right: Cold Front literally permeated with gloomy melancholy, peculiar to people who seem to live well, that they missed something somewhere and now cannot find it. In addition, longtime readers of Roman will surely appreciate how he has woven into the script his trademark taunts of a film critic, who, apparently, is still haunted by the prefix "ex".

"Mr. Holmes"

In one of his interviews, British actor Ian McKellen bitterly admitted that during the filming of The Hobbit, after many days of exhausting work in front of a green screen, he thought about leaving the cinema forever. As a 77-year-old of the old school, he was damn uncomfortable interacting with an imaginary partner instead of a living person. On the set, he felt terribly lonely and worried that he would not be able to overcome these difficulties. It's good that Sir Ian McKelen is sometimes invited to "normal" projects. He was able to fully reveal the theme of loneliness in the film by Bill Condon "Mr. Holmes" . This adaptation of Mitch Cullin's novel Mr. Holmes's Bees tells the story of an elderly Sherlock living in the wilderness, who is trying to restore in his memory the old case, in fact, and sent him to retire. Do not expect any intelligible detective intrigue from this picture - this is pure drama. A drama about the struggle of a still very intelligent person with humiliating senile dementia, about correct absolution, the torments of that very loneliness and, in the end, about a worthy transition from being into nothingness. Mister Holmes is, first of all, a colossal acting job, a kind of"Fuck you all with your green screen"from the owner of two nominations for Oscarand nearly five dozen professional awards.

Life

Another project you might have missed is by the legendary Dutch photographer, music video maker and director Anton Corbein. Life is not just a film about how cult American actor James Dean and photographer Dennis Stoke met and became friends. And Corbijn himself in his project is interested not only in the professional side of the issue. The foreground in this tape is how, in principle, the emergence of male friendship occurs. The main characters go through all the necessary stages - an awkward acquaintance, mistrust, true to the face, the joint use of alcohol and other children of revelry, as well as, of course, mutual grievances and overcoming them. You can honestly tell a true friend how you once vomited on your son, to which he will certainly answer you something like:“But your photos are good”- that's what this picture is about. In addition, Dane DeHaan and Robert Pattinson were 100 percent justified in choosing their personas for these roles. The first played not yet a legend, but a living, restless person, the second - the one who saw great potential in young James Dean and could not pass by, leaving him without his professional help, despite numerous difficulties and obstacles ...

"To each his own"

Image

This film-mood directed by Richard Linklater is filmed in the typical five-time Oscar nominee manner of light ironic sketch, this time from the life of college students in the 80s. A group of charming barbel in tight shorts have fun before school, discussing either female or baseball. The main characters are promising players, for the local get-together they are almost gods, as they take all the girls away. But this is not even close to modern youth comedies with their vulgar gags and speculation on human flaws. To each his own is a very light, lyrical cinema, absolute summer zen, as only Linklater can show it. The world, the director tells us, is so huge and hospitable, there are so many interesting and beautiful things in it. Any event can give you so much serene joy - from a bottle of beer served on time by a friend to a date with the cutest student on campus. You just have to breathe in deeply and open your arms towards this magic.

Son of Saul

Image

Director Laszlo Nemesh decided to turn to such a topic as the Holocaust, studied by filmmakers from all sides, but used an original technique - the back of the protagonist's head is in the frame almost all the time. Thanks to this, the effect of the viewer's presence in this hell on Earth is amplified a hundredfold. Moreover, the Hungarian Jew Saul is not just one of the prisoners - he is a member of the Sonderkommando. It is through his eyes that we observe how concentration camp prisoners are sent to the gas chambers. Last year's Oscar winner in the category Best Foreign Language Film , The Son of Saul does not speculate on a fertile topic, does not try to squeeze out of us a tear, or, conversely, soften the horror of what is happening. It also cannot be categorized as a movie not for everyone - at Nemesha everything is clear, there are no lengthy static scenes and beautiful shots taken solely for the sake of heightening the effect. Saul gives us an honest tour of Hell, and for a true cinematographer, this dull event shouldn't be left as an elective that can be skipped.

"Commune"

Image

The famous Danish director-provocateur and one of Lars von Trier's associates, Thomas Winterberg, in his new work staged a brutal reprisal against nostalgia for traditional family values and his own youth, and at the same time recognized all attempts of a person to avoid the black abyss of loneliness as futile. Although the movie begins quite optimistically: the architecture teacher Eric inherits a huge house and, since he cannot pay the rent himself, he sets up a real commune in his family nest. However, all the tenants are no longer young and more like caricatures of themselves, and the format of a cheerful hostel has long been scrapped, and therefore only mutual claims and inevitable discord await the heroes of the tape. Fans of Winterberg "Commune" may be interested in the fact that
Winter Song

While Hollywood continues to milk its franchises, somewhere in Europe, gray-haired movie classics are modestly filming sincere films about things we don't think about, like watching the next Avengers crushing cities. "Winter Song" 82-year-old Otar Ioseliani - these are several stories grotesque in form and content from different eras, connected with the theme of ironic and at the same time humble acceptance of death. What can we oppose to it? Only the joy of one moment, which can be shared with another, the same poor fellow. In "Winter Song" fake heads fly from the blockhouse, a person is flattened with a roller into a cake, like in a Disney cartoon, a tattooed priest forgives the sins of the marauding soldiers - and all this looks in one breath thanks to a single piercing motive,
Dachshund

Of course, only Todd Solondz could take a dog of one of the cutest breeds and make a film with her participation, full of scorching sarcasm and black-black humor. The main heroine of the picture, who is called either Doody , then Cancer , wanders from one owner to another (and perhaps these are completely different dachshunds), forcing them either to leave the comfort zone, either stop and think, or come to some important conclusions. The filming included such actors as Greta Gerwig, Danny DeVito, Julie Delpy, Kieran Culkin, Tracy Letts and the gorgeous Ellen Burstyn. And each of them was exactly in its place, occupying a niche in this canvas that belonged to him and only to him. DeVito - a vegetative loser screenwriter, Burstyn - a rich bilious babulence, Delpy - a loving mother of a son cured of cancer, and a sausage dog here is nothing more than the only bright ray in the dark kingdom of outcasts drowning in an ocean of despair.

"I, Daniel Blake"

Image

It is hard to believe that in an era when even mega-successful TV shows are filming about the pernicious influence of gadgets on our lifestyle, people who do not know how to use a computer live somewhere else. His name is Daniel Blake and he is an elderly carpenter from New Castle who can fix anything. But he just can't get the benefit from the state, since the bureaucratic system has long been automated. Daniel when he was born did not hold a mouse in his hands, and the word cursor causes him only a sarcastic grin. A very bright film by the renowned Briton Ken Loach brought Cannes critics to tears with a gallery of colorful characters from the bottom, but with the purest souls. For various reasons, the life of each of them is full of adversity, but a certain inner pride, self-esteem and, of course, humor helps them stay decent even in everyday despair. And Mr. Blake also finds the courage to talk about pressing issues publicly.

“Gimme Danger. The story of Iggy and The Stooges "

Image

And finally, do not forget to go on the waves of memory of the cult American director Jim Jarmusch. In his documentary film about Iggy Pop and his musicians, he does not so much pour facts as he deals with the funny chatter that is characteristic of his feature films. Well, let it be a movie about"one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time". This does not mean that the viewer needs to be choked with the chronology of events and reporting interviews. Gimme Danger is more like a hand-made gift for a friend than a serious study. But it was created with soul and imagination, just in a perky rock 'n' roll format befitting the occasion. Why did Jarmusch decide to shoot this way? The answer is obvious - because it can.
