”The Shape of Water” and ”Third Amigo”: Results of the 74th Venice Film Festival
In Italy, the 74th Venice Film Festival , which took place on the island of Lido from August 30 to September 9, finished its work. For the first time in the history of the event, the head of the jury this year was a woman - a four-time nominee for the Oscar award Annette Bening.The satirical comedy "In short" by director Alexander Payne, which also participated in the Main Competition, was chosen as the opening film of the festival. One of the most important events in the world of cinematography was closed by Takeshi Kitano's action movie Mayhem: The Final Chapter, which concludes the director's gangster trilogy, which he had been filming for almost ten years. All in all, 21 pictures were presented to the jury, and the judges recognized the best among the contestants as a new creation Guillermo del Toro - a romantic fairy tale " The Shape of Water ", which the director himself calls a portrait of hope and antidote of our time. Receiving the " Golden Lion ", nicknamed by the filmmaker "Sergio Leone" , del Toro said:If you remain pure in heart and stick to what you believe in, and for me they are monsters, in the end everything will be fine ".  The Shape of Water tells the story of a dumb cleaning lady who falls in love with a monster kept in the laboratory where she works. The tape managed to collect a lot of enthusiastic reviews at the festival, and there are still several months before its premiere on the big screens. Now the "three amigo of cinema", as Alfonso Cuarona, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Guillermo del Toro are called, have the Venice Film Festival award. After their debut on Lido, Cuaron with Gravity and Inarritu with Birdman managed to conquer the American Film Academy . Now it's the turn for del Toro , which the Oscars jury almost always bypassed (with the exception of the nomination for the script for Pan's Labyrinth), as well as films with a supernatural bias in general.  The Grand Prix at the Venice Film Festival went to the contemporary satire " Foxtrot " by Israeli director Samuel Maoz . The " Silver Lion " award for the best director was won by the Frenchman Xavier Legrand , who presented his debut work entitled "Guardianship" at the festival.  " Volpi Cup " for Best Actor went to Kamel El Basha . It is noteworthy that for an actor accustomed to theatrical stage, playing in the judicial drama "Insult" is only a second appearance in a feature film. The Best Actress award was awarded to Charlotte Rampling for her excellent performance in Hannah. The Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor or Actress went to Charlie Plummer , who starred in the film Trust in Pete.  The Best Screenplay award, Golden Donkey , went to Martin McDonagh , who presented his new black dramedy "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" at the festival. A special jury prize was awarded to the historical western " Sweet Country " from Australian director Warwick Thornton .  In general, this year most of the films presented at the festival dealt with political topics, be it historical events or our days. The representative of the Soviet cinema was also noted at the review: the war drama " Come and See " by Elema Klimova won the prize for the best restored picture.
