Joker conquered Venice Film Festival

Image The 76th Venice Film Festival, which took place from 28 August to 7 September, has ended in Italy. The jury of the show this year was headed by Argentine director and screenwriter Lucrecia Martel.

The festival was opened by a new work by Hirokazu Koreeda - the drama Pravda with Catherine Deneuve in the lead role, which also found a place in the Main Competition. The closing film of one of the most important events in the world of cinema was the dramatic thriller The Yellowish-Red Heresy by the Italian Giuseppe Capotondi. He did not participate in the Main competition.

In total, the jury had to evaluate 21 films, and they considered that the "Golden Lion" was worthy of "Joker" directed by Todd Phillips. The inclusion of the tape in the number of contestants at the Venice Film Festival was initially surprising, because films based on comics do not often appear on such lists. However, Phillips and Warner Bros. were confident in their offspring, and their expectations were met in full. The Joker turned out to be one of those films that were enthusiastically received by the public on the Lido, although many note that the tape turned out to be too violent. On the other hand, this is almost the only comic strip that reflects what is happening in society in the real world.

The Grand Prix of the Venice Film Festival was awarded to a new work by Roman Polanski - the drama The Officer and the Spy, which tells about the so-called Dreyfus case. The very presence of Polanski's work in the Main Competition caused a lot of gossip, however, as the head of the jury, Lucrecia Martel, said, the film earned a place among the contestants.

The Silver Lion Award for Best Director went to Roy Andersson, who presented the drama On Infinity at the Lido. It is noteworthy that in 2014 the Swede won the main prize of the festival.

The Volpi Cup for Best Actor went to Luca Marinelli for his performance in Martin Eden. The best actress was named Arian Ascarid, who surprised the jury of the film festival with her performance in the drama Prayer in the Name of God.

To Luca Marinelli's award was added a special jury prize, which went to director Franco Maresco for his mocumentaries "Mafia is not what it used to be." The animated film “House 7 on Cherry Lane” was recognized as the best screenplay, which took home the Golden Donkey prize.
