Leonardo DiCaprio Will Rescue Gorillas

Image Leonardo DiCaprio, Barry Jenkins and Netflix will join forces to create a feature film based on the Oscar-nominated 2014 documentary Virunga, which follows the rescue of mountain gorillas in the Congo. Leo will executive produce the upcoming project alongside longtime partner Jennifer Davisson of Appian Way. The film will also be produced by the original director, Orlando von Einsiedel. Jenkins will write the script.

Virunga follows the fight to save an endangered mountain gorilla in the eponymous national park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Orlando von Einsiedel, in his film, highlighted the biodiversity of the park, as well as touched on a number of economic and political issues related to oil production and armed conflicts in the region.

DiCaprio, who received the long-awaited Oscar for his starring role in The Survivor, has produced Robin Hood: The Beginning, The Richard Jewell Case, and The Ivory Game documentary about the illegal ivory trade in Africa. Jenkins was nominated for an Academy Award for director of Moonlight and screenwriter for If Beale Street Could Talk. His most recent screenwriting work includes boxing biopic drama Flint Strong.
