Five days in hell

Image August marked the 15th anniversary of the start of one of the worst and most devastating natural disasters in US history, Hurricane Katrina. Today it became known that the Apple TV + service will honor the memory of the victims of the disaster with the help of the mini-series Five Days at Memorial. (Five Days at Memorial).

The TV project will be based on the novel of the same name by Sheri Fink. In 2009, the writer published an article about the Memorial Medical Center, which was severely hit by the elements. The material was liked by critics and brought Fink the Pulitzer Prize. Sheri decided to develop the topic and started working on the book. In four years, she conducted over 500 interviews with doctors and patients of Memorial. The novel was released in September 2013 and received flattering reviews in the press.

At the height of the hurricane, Memorial was left without electricity. The lower floors were flooded, so doctors and nurses had to transfer patients to other departments. In total, several thousand people were locked in the building. The hospital management introduced an emergency regime, according to which outpatients were first to be evacuated, and patients with orders to prohibit resuscitation were the last.

First aid from outside came only on the third day. The situation was complicated by the fact that the evacuation took place exclusively by helicopters and small boats. By the end of the rescue mission, Memorial had lost 45 patients. Traces of morphine were found in the blood of 23 of them. US authorities suspected that hospital staff had euthanized terminally ill patients. Several nurses were charged with second-degree murder, but public pressure led the New Orleans chief coroner not to recognize the deaths as violent.

Previously, Fink's book was considered as the literary basis for one of the chapters of the popular anthology American Crime Story. As a result, the project migrated from the FX channel to the Apple TV + online platform. The miniseries's writing team will be led by Carlton Cuse (Lost, Jack Ryan) and Academy Award winner John Ridley (12 Years a Slave).
