Image In early April, we reported that Hollywood is finally ready to film a high-budget adaptation of Akira. Now fans of the manga have one more reason to rejoice: the author of "Akira" Katsuhiro Otomo set about creating a sequel to the famous post-apocalyptic saga.

The first issue of the original manga came out in December 1982. Over the next eight years, Otomo came up with 120 chapters of history, combined into six book volumes. To date, Akira has been translated into 15 languages, and its total circulation has exceeded 5 million copies.

In 1988, Katsuhiro brought his characters to the big screen. The budget for the animated version of "Akira" was $ 9 million. At that time it was the most expensive anime project in the history of world cinema. The film delighted critics and gained cult status among cyberpunk lovers. Its worldwide box office is estimated at $ 49 million. Another $ 80 million in the movie hit box brought sales on video.

At the Anime Expo in Los Angeles these days, it became known that Otomo is preparing a serial animated sequel to Akira. Details of the plot and the date of the premiere of the animated series are still kept secret.

As for the Hollywood version of Akira, it will hit the cinema screens on May 20, 2021.
