Streaming Strikes Back

Image In recent years, the Dream Factory has split into two camps. One believes that films from online services should only claim television awards, while the other advocates the participation of streaming platforms in the fight for cinematic prizes. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has added fuel to the controversy: the organization is changing the rules for applying for the Golden Globe.

At the moment, the global film distribution is paralyzed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this regard, the HFPA is temporarily canceling the rule according to which films-candidates for the "Golden Globe - 2021" must receive multiple screenings in Los Angeles cinemas. Naturally, streaming platforms will benefit from this initiative in the first place.

Now studios and streaming broadcasters need only send a DVD screener or a link to download the film to the Association members. The new selection rules come into force this month and will be valid until April 30. If cinemas are not back on track by then, HFPA will extend the timeline for the experiment. Insiders believe that other Hollywood organizations, including the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, will soon resort to similar measures.

Online services were among the few members of the film industry to benefit from the spread of the coronavirus. First, they saw huge audience gains through the worldwide self-isolation regime. Streaming platforms have now increased the chances of a new season of movie awards.
