Image In 1988, the US government established the National Film Registry, a list of film works of cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance. A few months later, the names of the first 25 paintings that were sent for restoration and storage to the Library of Congress became known. Since then, updating the National Register has become a good New Year's Eve tradition. Today, the list includes 25 more films, thanks to which its total number has grown to 775 titles.

The Library of Congress received over 6,000 applications this year. The list of finalists spanned the age of world cinema, from the black and white short film The Arrival of Immigrants to Ellis Island in 1903 to the documentary Fog of War in 2003.

Seven of the 25 roster recruits were filmed by women. Ladies have never received such solid representation on the Library of Congress's annual listings. Taking into account the Oscar-winning films Gaslight and The Miner's Daughter, Ingrid Bergman and Sissy Spacek, it becomes obvious that women set the tone for the 2019 collection.
