”Waiting for the Barbarians.” Trailer that pacifies the enemy

Image The writer JM Coetzee was widely known for his third novel, Waiting for the Barbarians. The book, first published in 1980, is a powerful protest against human violence, war and any other methods of capture. Until recently, this landmark work could boast only of what served as the basis for theatrical performances. Now "Waiting for the Barbarians" is also a film with the stars of world cinema.

An unnamed Magistrate lives in a remote settlement on the border of an unnamed Empire. He calmly prepares to retire until Colonel Joll appears in town. Its tasks include monitoring the actions of the so-called barbarians and strengthening the borders of the Empire, which, according to rumors, will be attacked by those same barbarians. Joll's methods are very dubious, he does not hesitate to use violence against those interrogated, because of which the Magistrate begins to doubt his loyalty to the Empire.

The magistrate was played by Oscar winner Mark Rylance, while Johnny Depp embodied the image of Colonel Joll as opposed to him. You can also see Robert Pattinson in the film. The film was directed by Ciro Guerra from Colombia (Birds of Passage), for whom Waiting for the Barbarians is an English-language debut.
