Pedro Almodovar will tame the ”Golden Lion”

Image Believe it or not, Pedro Almodovar never won the main award at the Venice Festival. In 1988, the Spaniard won the Golden Osella for the script for Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, but lost the fight for the Golden Lion to Ermanno Olmi and his Legend of the Holy Drunkard. Since then, one of the greatest directors of our time has never again claimed victory at the oldest international film festival. The organizers of the 76th Venice Festival decided to correct the historical injustice and to award Almodovar with the honorary "Golden Lion".

Despite his defeat at The Legend of the Holy Drunkard, Pedro must have fond memories of his previous visits to Venice. In 1983, he first entered the foreign film market, bringing to Italy the black comedy "The Indiscreet Charm of Vice". Five years later, the director returned to the city on the water with Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, which brought him worldwide fame and critical acclaim.

Since then, Almodovar has amassed an impressive gallery of awards. He has two Oscars, four Cannes Film Festival awards, five BAFTA statuettes and many other awards. Now the collection of the Spanish maestro will be replenished with the Golden Lion for his contribution to the development of cinema.

It was previously announced that another special "Golden Lion" will go to actress Julie Andrews. The 76th annual Venice Festival starts on 28 August and runs until 7 September. The main competition program of the screening will be announced at the end of next month.
