BBC Worldwide Corporation has decided to make a second attempt to bring to the small screens the heroes of the novels Douglas Adams about the detective Dirk Gently .The first adaptation of the book cycle was released in late 2010, when the British channel BBC Four premiered an hour-long pilot of the comedy detective "Dirk Gently" ( Dirk Gently ). The film adaptation was warmly received by critics and viewers, as a result of which the network bosses ordered the production of a three-part first season. The new series aired in March 2012, but failed to evoke the same enthusiasm among the public. In May of that year, BBC Four announced the closure of the series. According to some critics, one of the reasons for this decision was that " Dirk Gently " could not compete with another detective series BBC - "Sherlock" ( Sherlock ). As reported by Deadline , the work on the new film adaptation of the book cycle Adams will be conducted by the subsidiary channel of the British television giant. North American television network BBC America has already commissioned an eight-episode first season, written and produced by Max Landis (The Chronicle).  The series will be a comedy thriller with the eccentric detective Dirk Gently and his assistant Todd as the central characters. The leadership of BBC America has already successfully completed the search for the role of the titular hero's partner. Todd will play Elijah Wood ("The Lord of the Rings"), who is familiar with the world of television from his work on the comedy series "Wilfred" ( Wilfred ). Todd does not consider himself an outsider like Dr. Watson . He not only takes an active part in the investigation of mysterious crimes, but also surpasses Gently in many respects. Todd is a witty guy with a big heart, but he also has some serious flaws. Sometimes he is ready to lie without a twinge of conscience, and sometimes he even tries to pocket something from the crime scene ...  The first part of the book series Adams , " Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency ", was published in 1987, when the writer became known throughout the world for his cycle " The Hitchhiker in the galaxy ". In 1988, the second novel about the adventures of a detective was presented to readers - "The Long Tea Party ". Over the years, Douglas has been working on the next part, but, unfortunately, never finished his work. The collection " Salmon of Doubt ", which included the preliminary version of the third book about Gently , was published a year after his death.  AMC Studios and IDW Entertainment will be contributing to new adaptations of the Dirk Gently novels. The series is slated to premiere this fall.
