Universal tells the story of Mary Magdalene
Studio Universal begins work on a film about one of the most mysterious and controversial figures in the history of Christianity - Mary Magdalene , reports The Hollywood Reporter . The Hollywood major will partner on the biblical drama with See-Saw Films , which has a track record of films such as The King's Speech, Shame, Mr. Holmes and Macbeth.According to the New Testament , Mary was healed by Jesus Christ from demonic possession, after which she became a zealous follower of his teachings. Magdalene was present at Calvary at the crucifixion of the Son of God , witnessed his burial, and then became the first to see Christ after the resurrection. For the first time, the image of Mary on the big screen in the silent film "From the manger to the cross or Jesus of Nazareth" was embodied by Alice Hollister. Since then, Magdalene has featured in dozens of feature-length films and TV series, but never before has she been placed at the center of a plot. Over the past century, Maria has been played by Barbara Hershey, Anne Bancroft, Irina Miroshnichenko, Debra Messing, Ornella Muti, Monica Bellucci and other actresses.  The drama director has been entrusted to Emmy nominee Garth Davis ( Top of the Lake ), who will direct the script by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett. Filming is scheduled to begin this summer.
