Rami Malek: I signed up for the role of Mercury out of recklessness

Image The prison drama Moth, directed by Michael Noer and based on the autobiographical bestseller by Henri Charriere, tells the story of a character nicknamed Moth (Charlie Hunnam), sentenced to life in prison for a murder he did not commit, and his epic journey from the Parisian criminal community through hard labor in French Guiana to the long-awaited freedom. Deciding to escape at any cost, Moth makes a strange and incomprehensible friendship to those around him with a counterfeiter named Louis Degas (Rami Malek), who agrees to finance the escape of his new comrade in exchange for his own safety. In an interview, Rami Malek told why he decided to star in this film, about what connects such different characters, about his vision of the image of Freddie Mercury in the upcoming biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody" and the fourth season of "Mr. Robot.

Are you embarrassed by the fact that you were in a remake?

I would not like to be in such films all the time, but sometimes you can. This is a great chance to test yourself as a professional. Plus, I love real-life scenarios, so this opportunity just couldn't be missed. And when you can retell something interesting in your own way, in a historical perspective, there is a useful opportunity to add something from yourself, and this is great. We got down to work with great deference to the original because everyone had heard about this film, whether they watched it or not. We worked very thoughtfully and carefully, especially since with a director like Michael Noer, who has his own unique vision of filmmaking and knows how to make films about prison, everything falls into place. Of course, you can't stop looking back at Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, great actors in iconic roles, but thinking too much about it can be a disservice to yourself. It's funny to try to put myself in their shoes, but I like to challenge myself like this.

Image What made you decide to sign the contract?

I would say the thought of what kind of realism we could achieve, and not just in the picture. We had an amazing cameraman, Hagen Bogdansky, who took storytelling to the next level. This does not mean that the original was not beautiful enough, but a modern rethinking can show everything in a new way. The very idea that being in prison, in isolation, can rebuild not only your own spirit, but also help you understand the experiences of another person, give rise to a wonderful friendship - that's what attracted me. I decided: if we can take these two characters, add something new to them and show what happens if one depends on the other and they have to spend a lot of time together, then something very interesting and worthwhile may come out.

It's very interesting to watch these two men, given that they are both criminals. The moth is in hard labor not necessarily for the crime he committed, but he was a full member of the Parisian criminal community, so both of them somehow violated the law. However, we really empathize with them in the terrible circumstances in which they found themselves ...

Yes. This is exactly what you must overcome as a viewer. I hate to speak for everyone, but I really think that compassion and forgiveness are inherent in human nature. Our protagonists may be criminals, but their dignified behavior under inhuman conditions outweighs the alleged crimes they have committed.

Surely the filming was grueling both mentally and physically. Have there been times when you thought: “Why did I subscribe to this and how did I get here ?!”.

Sure! There were very, very difficult days. Sometimes I didn't know what to think. For filming, they built a real prison, and there was no sense of scenery at all: there was concrete all around, everything was so scary, real, as if all this was serious. Plus, you're constantly surrounded by a crowd of people who don't smell good by the end of the day. And from time to time, the actors were covered with dirt so that the appearance was reliable. There were really difficult days, when the mud got wet in the rain, and we were shooting up to our ears in this ... Not the most pleasant part of the process, it was not easy and very unusual, but this is my job, and I did not feel any special inconveniences, especially watching how more and more voluminous and interesting picture appears every day.

Recently, Christian Slater mentioned that the fourth season of "Mr. Robot" may be the last, as Sam Esmail from a creative point of view does not want to engage in long projects. What do you know about this?

Well, I've heard something like this, and I've heard the opposite.

It seems that he originally planned four or five seasons ...

Yes, it is, but the final picture is still only in his head. I can tell you with confidence that the studio would like to continue the show for as long as possible, but Sam is pretty reticent about such matters. He is an amazing person and he has something to show the world, so I will accept any of his decisions and will be with him until the end.

Image He somehow hinted about what the fourth season would be ?

What should I answer to make it interesting? Yes, of course, he hinted at something. I will say that I personally begin to prepare for the role much earlier than the rest of the actors, so I receive information in advance. But I have to keep the intrigue, so I'll just put on a mysterious face.

Got it. But everyone loves your show. And the script is great, and you all play amazing.

Thank. This world exists independently, and entering it, you seem to fall into a fairy-tale portal. Portal to Sam Esmail's imagination.

We also worry a little about Bohemian Rhapsody. What prompted you to make such a responsible decision and try on the image of Freddie Mercury?

Exceptionally reckless. Sometimes there is an opportunity to take on some kind of work, but you never know whether the project will shoot or not. Therefore, you should not think too much - you just need to take a chance and plunge into the pool with your head. This is the only way to make up your mind. Obviously, such a role is a huge responsibility for someone who tries to play such an iconic and revolutionary historical figure. I just thought that I needed to experience his essence as a person. There can never be another Freddie, no matter how hard the creators and the actor make when filming. If you copy a sneaker into a sneaker, you get a documentary. So, I saw what we did. And this is not a documentary.

Was Freddie Mercury the character you don't want to part with?

Yes of course. I have always liked him, I adore his music, and the profession gave me the opportunity to take a fresh look at this outstanding person, who has always caused me great admiration and respect. Some actors are happy to part with one or another role after filming, but I am not one of them. I will remember this time all my life with gratitude both as an actor and as a person.

It is known that there was a difficult moment during the production of the film when Dexter Fletcher replaced Brian Singer in the director's chair. What did this mean for you personally as an actor? How does it feel to end up with the wrong person?

Well, the rest of the team stayed. And given my experience in serials, where sometimes a new director comes to each episode, it was not at all difficult for me. It is not exhausting, on the contrary, it is useful to hear a new voice in the final stage when everyone is tired.

We are glad that the film will still be released ...

And even ahead of schedule! The premiere was scheduled for Christmas, but it turned out well. And that's cool. I have nothing to add here.
