USA nominated Khabensky's war drama for Oscar

Image Not every director can boast that his very first work in a big cinema got a chance to win an Oscar. Yesterday, our compatriot Konstantin Khabensky joined the elite club of debutant directors who were on the long list of candidates for the main film award in the world. According to TASS, the USA Oscar Committee has nominated the military drama Sobibor for the Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

The news that the honor of USA cinema at the Oscar-2019 will be represented by Khabensky's tape was shared with the journalists of the news agency by producer Alexander Rodnyansky, who stressed that the decision to nominate Sobibor was made by a majority vote.

The script is based on Ilya Vasiliev's book "Alexander Pechersky: Breakthrough into Immortality" about a Soviet officer who organized the only successful escape from the Nazi death camp Sobibor. The image of the main character of the film was embodied by Konstantin Khabensky himself. Christopher Lambert, Maria Kozhevnikova, Michalina Olshanska, Wolfgang Cerny and other actors also participated in the creation of the biographical drama.

The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will close submissions for the foreign films category on October 1. Then a special Oscar committee will be convened, whose members will be able to vote for their favorite films. Nine films will overcome the preliminary selection sieve, which will make up the so-called short-list of candidates for the Oscar in this nomination. The five finalists in the Best Foreign Language Film category will be announced on January 22 next year during the announcement of the general list of nominees for the 2019 Oscar.
