Trier returns to Cannes

Image After seven long years, during which two parts of The Nymphomaniac managed to come out, director Lars von Trier is packing his suitcases again for a trip to the Cote d'Azur. The director of the festival, Thierry Fremault, announced the removal from the shocking Dane of the Cannes "anathema". According to him, Lars' new film "The House That Jack Built" will compete with rivals in the Main Competition, but there is no official confirmation of this yet.

Thriller Trier tells about a serial killer who hunted in 70-80s of the last century in Washington. The film stars Matt Dillon (Rumble Fish), Uma Thurman (Kill Bill) and Riley Keough (Logan's Luck). Insiders call the movie extremely cruel, comparing it with another director's work - "Antichrist". The director himself described the film as the apotheosis of the idea of an evil and heartless life.

The scandal that closed the director's road to Cannes came after a press conference in the spring of 2011, at which they discussed the premiere of Trier's film Melancholy with Kirsten Dunst in the title role. Then, when asked by a journalist about German roots, the Danish director, who grew up in a foster family and for a long time considered himself a Jew, joked unsuccessfully, confessing his sympathy for Hitler and calling himself a Nazi. He added fuel to the fire and Lars's earlier interest in Nazi aesthetics, which the public did not fail to recall. After that, the festival's management was forced to name Trier persona non grata, but Melancholy was not removed from the competition program, and the film even received an award for Best Actress.

Later, the Dane publicly apologized for the bad humor, but said that he was not going to appeal anything and was even proud of being excommunicated, because there was no such thing in the history of cinema.

Previously, Trier was a regular guest of the Cote d'Azur, along with his films he was nominated for the main award nine times and took it once for the film "Dancing in the Dark". In his piggy bank are five more different prizes brought from Cannes: from the technical grand prix ("Element of crime") to the grand prix of the jury ("Breaking the waves") and the prize for artistic contribution ("Europe").
