Cranston and Hart conquered the US box office
For three weeks "Aquaman" towered majestically above other North American releases, leading the financial rankings, and if everything went according to plan, then the last weekend (January 11-13) would have remained behind the DC blockbuster. However, the bandwagon of James Wang's film was unexpectedly set up by a remake of the French dramedy "1 + 1".The film "1 + 1: Hollywood Story" debuted at the box office with an excellent result of $ 19.6 million, despite the fact that analysts predicted its start in the range of $ 10-14 million. Because Warner Bros. and didn’t expect that the dramedy, who had gone through the thorny path to the big screens, would be able to oppose something to “Aquaman”. As for the 1 + 1 remake, it has been gathering dust on the shelf for a year and a half. Neil Berger's painting was the victim of the scandal that erupted around Harvey Weinstein. There were many projects in limbo, the distributor of which was the company of a famous producer, and only a few managed to escape. "Hollywood Story" was among the lucky ones: STX bought the rights to it. However, for a start, the studio bosses asked Berger to re-edit the film in order to change the R rating to PG-13 to attract a larger audience. Many wondered why STX was releasing a project like this when Aquaman, Mary Poppins and the animated Spider-Man were simultaneously at the box office. Others asked why the company was not promoting 1 + 1 as an Oscar candidate. However, STX wiped its nose at all the dissatisfied, and Berger's tape showed the best start among the studio films.  "Hollywood Story" premiered at the Toronto Festival back in 2017. Visitors to the event enjoyed the comedy drama, but in a year and a half, its rating on Rotten Tomatoes dropped to 34%. However, a successful advertising campaign solved the word of mouth problem, and the first viewers gave a "1 + 1" a high score A. Among the positive aspects of the remake is the excellent performance of Brian Cranston and Kevin Hart, who made the film charming. However, Berger and his team made an almost complete copy of the French hit, which, of course, did not escape the view of the reviewers.  "Aquaman" was content with the amount of $ 17.3 million and second place, but consolidated the title of the best film in the DC cinematic universe. James Wang's blockbuster passed the Rubicon last weekend - the billion mark at the worldwide box office. And if in the United States the film comics grossed a rather modest $ 287.9 million compared to the rest of DC films, then outside of its native cinemas it has no equal. Among all the adaptations of comics published by Aquaman, with its $ 1.02 billion, it ranks second - only The Dark Knight Rises ($ 1.08 billion) collected more.  The other three places in the top-5 are occupied by the projects of the Sony studio. On the third line climbed the newcomer rental - the drama "The Way Home". She finished her first weekend at $ 11.3 million, a mediocre achievement for a $ 18 million budget. In 2017, "Dog Life" collected much more ($ 18.2 million), but "Max" showed similar results. Analysts believe that Charles Martin Smith's picture suffered from bad publicity, as well as from the fact that its plot is very similar to the movie "The Way Home: An Incredible Journey." Critics note the cliches and weak script of "The Way Home", although one look into the eyes of a cute dog will melt even a hardened heart.  Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse continues to reap the benefits of its success at the Golden Globe Awards. The cartoon lost only 31% of viewers and put an additional $ 9 million in its piggy bank. Now its total earnings are $ 147.8 million, and soon the tape will surpass the results of "Monsters on Vacation" ($ 148.3 million), thus becoming the third in the list highest grossing cartoons from Sony Pictures Animation. The studio is so pleased with their new creation that they even think about solo albums for the heroes of Spider-Man.  The fifth place is occupied by the thriller "Claustrophobes", left without half of the audience, which did not prevent him from earning another $ 8.9 million. For ten days at the box office, the picture mastered $ 32.4 million, which is almost four times more than its $ 9 million budget. It is curious that over the past few years, at least two more films with a similar title have been released. One received the name "Quest" from USA localizers, the other - "Claustrophobia", but these horror stories did not have a chance to conquer the Americans, and they earned devastating reviews, unlike the "Claustrophobes".
